Advice on buying '95 R1100R
Hello all. I've been lurking for quite some time but don't post much. I'm new to here but not to BMW motorcycles. I have owned an '01 R1200C Phoenix for four years. I'm looking at a '95 R1100R in great condition with 20K miles on it. Can you please tell me what else I should look for with this bike? Known quirks, issues, common fixes, etc.?

I know the price is probably right; I'd make sure it has ABS. I'd rather see you ante up a little more for a used R1200R; two iterations newer and light years better; you'd get you additional money back when you trade or sell; look for a 2007, would be least expensive; they are out there. I had an R1100R and traded in on 2007 R1200R and never looked back.

Cool, I had a 01 1200C Montana and sold it. Later I walked into a deal that was too good to pass up on a '95 R1100R and w/ 17k and
glad i got it. I just got back from the NM BMW Rally in Sipapu NM and had a blast on it. Love those classic lines on the '95. I don't know of any specific defects to look for as mine feels bulletproof. Low miles is good thing and one with 20k is rare. I say go for it and enjoy.

Re: Advice on buying '95 R1100R
Hi
I would check if it had the HES replaced, possibly starter motor, as these were known to cause some trouble on the earlier models. Both not very difficult to replace yourself, especially starter, but still worth asking.
Take a ride and check if the gearbox shifts without problems and there's no gear skip, the earlier gearboxes (pre 97) have non-undercut gears and can develop problems, especially if not shifted with preload as i understand.
Also the FD (final drive) can be problematic if not assembled properly, check for play in the rear wheel (both in 6-12 and 3-9 o'clock position, 6-12 should have no play, 3-9 max 1 mm play). The best would be to ask when the last gearbox and FD oils were changed, if not recently then draining them and checking for metal shavings etc can tell a lot about the state of the components.
Good luck
Cheers
