Hello All,

I just registered for the forum and more importantly just became the owner of a 2002 R1150R. I bought the bike used locally in my area-So Cal. It has 10k on it and seems to be in pristine condition. The previous owner passed away and hadn't ridden much in a few years. I am not a mechanic by any means but it runs pretty smooth and my un-trained ear doesn't hear anything wrong.

I figured I would take it in early for the 12k service just to be caught up on everything.

I am a somewhat new rider and haven't seriously rode a motorcycle in about 20 years so I am looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. I did a quick test run the other day and as I said the bike sounds great and seems to be comfortable as anything.

Anybody have any comments, suggestions, or advice?

If the bike has been sitting for a few years take a look at the service history.
That will help you determine what needs attention.
Watch out for cagers on cell phones in LA. Not only do they not see you, they don't care!

Welcome echo42kp and enjoy what a marvelous machine the 1150R is! This forum is a great place to learn about it. And if you want to get the most out this capable machine I'd suggest reading David Hough's "Proficient Motorcycling"; It contains essential information for the avid rider, which this bike will make you!

Couldn't you make it on to overall check-up?

I have put about 250 miles on the bike in the past week and it has about 10,500 miles now. The bike seems to ride great. I have checked the service records and it had some sort of service at 8K miles about a year ago. Should i take it in early for the 12K or just have a regular check-up type of visit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the bike has not been ridden for several years the first thing to address is changing all the fluids (brake, engine- and gearbox oil). All the rest should not be a problem. And based on how she was stored all those years I would inspect all the joints for corrosion.

Make sure you clean around the exterior of the spark plugs before attempting to remove them. Amazed how much bitumen/tar/grit was lurking in the head castings. Same age as my bike which I love.

Welcome aboard. And as others have said, get the fluids changed. The oil is a piece of cake to do on your own. And check the sides of the tires to see how old they are. Have fun.
