Two years later and the '87 Carrera 911 labor of love is nearly restored. The cental door lock- and cruise control modules have gone stupid; and there're still a few minor electrics to sort through. Seems like I got a black-scheme German boxer thing going since last Fall. And there's a navy blue '91 Merc 350SD with 585,000 miles in the carport. They're all built the same - a little weird, rock solid, no rattles. It's usually a toss-up between the R12R and the 911 on a nice day. Actually, since I got a Gerbing jacket and gloves it's a toss up on cold days, too.



You have a German cage?

I had a VW Touareg and a VW R32 until recently. Just two months ago I purchased a 2013 Acura RDX small suv as I need the space for my two Greyhounds.

I've owned several VW's and two Audi's and two BMW's. German cars just have a different feel to them. Nice Porsche BTW.

Had a 2002 in the 70s, then a year with a 530i, then I was done with BMW cars. Now I drive a 2001 VW Passat:



It's a fine car, but I put more miles on the bike.

I don't own a car - all moto all the time. Although my wife has a sensible Camry, which I guess I technically own too. But I don't drive - I just ride.

Used to have a nice E320 Cab, though. Nice car - like several others, I sort of wish I had held on to it.

Well.. I have a history of BMW cars (a number of ///M's) down to one 4 wheeled BMW now ('01 M-Coupe) and a Porsche Cayenne. SWMBO left the fold - looking for reliability with a Lexus.. (modern BMW cars are NOT real reliable after 100k miles, except to break.) The R12R gets more miles per year on it than my two German cars combined. My first car was also German - a '59 DKW 3=6, truely should have taught me something, but apparently it didn't.

On my third 5 series BMW, a 2000 540i with the M package (that's everything but the engine).

This one has 219,000 smiles on it. My first, a 528e had 250,000 when the body rotted out. On regular gas , 31 mpg. My second, a 535i, was way north of 150,000 when a woman hit it headon with my son driving but stopped at a light.

The 540i is plenty too fast for me and the 6 speed shifts like butter. It is a great car in need of a replacemnt for the back seat due to being used to transport my Rotwieler (RIP) and Weimeraner to the Blue Hills for hiking expeditions.

All three cars came with three pedals, two 5 spds and a 6 spd.

I can't even think about a replacement for it. Luckily, I have my new Roaster to keep me busy.

I used to be a co-owner of a non-turbo 1984 944. It handled beautifully, and had plenty of head and leg room (something which 911's tend to neglect). It was a fun car, but it had gone through a number of rebuilds before my friend and I got our hands on it. It also came with its share of issues, including switches, wiring, and extremely brittle plastic trim pieces. It ended its days as a parts source for a 944 road racer (sigh).

me too. A 75 2002 Amazon green palomino? interior, then a 76 530i. Sold the 530i in 82, then a MB 300CD turbo. Then in 86 a 190 e w a 5 speed--very much like the 2002. Sold the 2002 after 17 years and three children learning on it. Sold the 190e in 97, got a 320 SL, best car I ever owned. Got a 320 ml, then sold it and was done with the expense of German cars. Acura MDX 2009 and Infiniti G37 2009 are in the garage now and my son drives a 6 speed Mazda 3 SkyActif. Next car may be another acura or infiniti or an Accord coupe v6

I got away from BMW cars because I thought the sacrificed durability and reliability for handling and sportiness.

2008 328xi, 6 speed - my first german car. Used to drive Subarus for last 10 years, all sticks, turbo boxers...

Sure! A while back we had a 2000 Audi S4 and a 2002 BMW M Coupe. We got rid of the Audi @ 130,000 miles as parts and repairs were to frequent and costly.

Still have and will keep the M Coupe and as less than 400 were made in 2002...it has to be 'collectible' some day.

The last cage I owned was a black '95 328i. I loved that car, beat the crap out of it for many years, and sold it for a good price in 2004. My experience with that car may have had something to do with the purchase of a BMW motorcycle in 2006. If I ever bought another car (which looks less likely every year) I think I would get an M5 4-door. I would do my best to make it look like a plain 5 series sedan. I always liked the idea of pulling up to a stoplight in a 4-door sedan, revving my engine at the guy in the muscle car next to me and then leaving him in the dust

Same here. I think the car gets better MPG than the bike. Love them both. I must be afflicted with some sort of German virus.

Deja vu all over again.

I forgot about olden days.... a 1963 BMW 2000 (in Germany!) in 1973-74; and a 1986 535i from 1990-96. There were both four-door sedans and both tremendous cars for me. I ran that little 2l all over Deutschland with nary a blip. The old body style 535i was, for me, the ultimate driving machine.

I had a new beetle, more Mexican than German.

Only when I drive my wife's Jetta TDI Sportswagen. Mine have been a '95 M3 replaced by 540i replaced by 330i replaced by Cooper S replaced by 135i replaced by GTI replaced by a Volt.

I find I ride the Beemer to work Mon-Fri and chase sports bikes in the 86 on the weekends. It is a truly awesome car.

Nearly a year since I purchased a Jetta sportwagen TDI for my wife, which I drive when we are together going somewhere. More than four decades since the Porsches, a 356B coupe and 356c. About ten years ago I gave away an NSU when I realized I would never take the time to restore it.

A Dodge 4500 is my work vehicle, the R1200R is what I use to bid jobs (and take the long way home ).
