Hi all,
I am a newbie to the r1150gs, i bought a 2003 r1150gs that has are 54500Km mileage reading. it runs fine but and I am very certain the BMW is a nice machine but i have this feeling that sooner than later i will have to replace some parts. ( parts i know very little about).
I can not get the history of the maintenance because the previous owner was not keen on keeping track of such. I am seeking for hints on where to start from. What are the major places to start checking. My previous bikers where 1-chain driven, 2-Carburetor intakes,3-of the 1990's and 4- Electrical wirings were very simple etc etc . I therefore do not wanna think my previous experience at maintaining such bikes can just be copied and pasted for these models.
Thats why i seek your opinions that am sure will come with loads or experience
Thank you all in advance

Re: more than 50K mileage on r1150gs
My take is to do a routine major servicing (sort of thing I'd do when getting any new-to-me bike, fluids, plugs, any recommended factory adjustments to spec) and call it good. If it's not broken, don't worry about fixing it. Tuneup, learn how to get the valves in spec and RIDE!
My 1100R has 150K on it, and I just replaced the head gaskets last fall, but only because it weeped oil on my right boot when I was caning it on backroads. Besides that, the service history is full of plugs, brakes, oil changes and tires.

Of course, most of what you'll read here on the Roadster board R1150R section is applicable, since the GS and R share drivetrain and some other parts.
Congratulations and Enjoy!

Re: more than 50K mileage on r1150gs
I clocked in about 100k kilometers on my GS. No big issues to be honest. One seal started leaking between the engine & clutch.
About 60 euro in parts (seal + 6 torgue bolts) & 4 to 5 hours labour. BMW changes 11 time units (+/- 9 hours), I got it done by a dutch forum member.
Heard some stories about wear on the pistons after about 100k, but also saw GS riders with a hazzle-free 150k on the counter.
Guess it's all about preventive maintenance in the end.
