On Saturday, I sold my beloved R12R and rode home on a K1600GT, a bike I've been eyeing since its release in 2011. It is a beast, and I couldn't be more thrilled. In a continuing motorcycle education, the R12R was an undergraduate degree. Hopefully, the K16GT turns out to be a master's.

Here's a pitstop from the long, mountainous ride home:

If I had my druthers, the R12R would be sitting in the garage next to the GT, but such is family, economics, and available space. One motorcycle really isn't enough.

Have enjoyed participating in, and learning from, this terrific forum. You guys are the best.

Take care,

Bill

(Oh, I'll have some R12R stuff for sale in the Classified section soon!)

How about coming back for a comparison review after you have a few miles on your new bike?

Bill,

Since you're signed up as a "Lifer" - having or not having an R12R isn't an issue..

Enjoy the new bike and let us know how it works out for you..

Bill,

I'm going to miss your input. I can understand the lure, but just the same...

Congratulations on your new bike!

I saw the K1600GT close up at the Sedalia BMWMOA Rally, but did not ride one.

The sound that this bike makes is awesome, so I am sure riding it must be an experience as well.

I bet you are going to love that bike. I have ridden one. If I were in a position to bag the real world and head out on a bike for a indefinite period of time, the K1600GT would definitely be the ride. I am assuming there is one in my future, but I have a ways to go.

Your input has been appreciated. Hope to see you say hello from time to time.

Congrats on a new sweet, sweet ride.

Remember, buying a new bike does not make one less of an expert on their old bike :)

How is the K1600GT? A bike I lust after but am not nearly ready for!

Came across this track video of the K1600GT. There is flash of Candy
Apple Red during a passing maneuver at 6:45 ;)

Alex, after 1,500 miles, I love it. Under way, it feels about 20 pounds heavier than the R12R. In the garage, it is indeed ~200 pounds heavier. And I like that it's one of the last bikes from Motorrad under David Robb's design eye. I'm keen on doing a SaddleSore 1000, something that would be more arduous on the Roadster. Someone on a K16 forum said there are better touring bikes out there, and there are better sport bikes out there, but none combine that duality like the K16. It's a Jekyll and Hyde ride, smooth, steady, sedate on a highway or an unhinged hooligan on W.V. twisties. Just depends on your mood.

Like some schizophrenics, the GT can intimidate. The first 900 miles or so were bliss, and then I had two 0-mph drops (within a week!), resulting in a major crisis in confidence. I actually emailed the sales manager, Steve, at Morton's, saying I'd made a huge mistake. But my wife(!) and Steve pulled me back from the ledge. Motoring is therapy for my mercurial states, and I guess a little bit of fear is a good thing.

Take a test. This ain't a dress rehearsal. :)

One of my last long rides before it got really cold in Maryland. The frigid air hasn't let up much this winter.

I dislike you for having that rocket to ride, but I hate you for your ability to compose a great picture.

off subject - Do you belong to the club that puts on Square Root?
