Just bought a basketcase Rockster

Post by Jayssell »

Hi, my first BMW but not my first bike in a box project. She is the white striped Limited edition #301 of 2003, 30k miles. I was told it was an electrical issue that grounded her. Grounded her , hehehe. I have 2 other bikes in front of her that are under reconstruction but want to start collecting parts and info now. So a couple questions .
Where can I get the blueish/black paint for the front fork brace ?
Are there any aftermarket headlight replacements or can I just replace bulbs?
Should I keep the ABS or remove it?
Should I remove the exhaust can?
Does anyone have a fuel mapping program available?
Should I remove the airbox and install Pods?
I have read here that the stick coils go bad, what does it matter if they are removed, they dont seem to add to the equation?
I watched the video about the charcoal canister, reroute the hoses etc, how prevalent an issue is the charcoal back flushing into the gas tank?
What is the best shop manual for her?
What is the Tall seat part number !
Is there a basement in this building?
Ok , thats it, enough ?s

Welcome!

Congratulation! It sounds like you have an Edition 80. Since you have other bike projects you may want to consider getting it running good in stock form and as you learn more about it, do your mods. Keep the ABS.

There are Facebook pages for Rocksters and Edition 80.

I'm in East Texas.

Thanks Kevster!
I found a wire diagram , a source for the paint , and I will take your advise and leave the ABS alone for now.

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=24943&hilit=paint

Are there any aftermarket headlight replacements or can I just replace bulbs?
H1 bulbs in both high and low/dip beam

Should I keep the ABS or remove it?
Too personal a question, but removal is possible (with some caveats)

Should I remove the exhaust can?
And/or the cat converter y-section... search here for info; weight versus noise versus cost (no performance benefits).

Does anyone have a fuel mapping program available?
Install AF-XIED per info found here and on ADV board.

Should I remove the airbox and install Pods?
No benefit to removal unless running WFO all the time.

I have read here that the stick coils go bad, what does it matter if they are removed, they dont seem to add to the equation?
Gotta have coils for the primary spark plugs, whether it's stick coils or replacements mounted external to heads.

I watched the video about the charcoal canister, reroute the hoses etc, how prevalent an issue is the charcoal back flushing into the gas tank?
It's more of a choice re: simplicity...

What is the best shop manual for her?
Clymer, Haynes, and http://advwisdom.hogranch.com/Wisdom/

What is the Tall seat part number !
52 53 7 672 705 BENCH SEAT, HIGH - BLACK $354.57
But consider aftermarket options

coils were only a big problem 2004+ I thought? on the dual spark boxers. Maybe the rockster is dual though?

good luck! one of my fave bikes is that ED80 rockster. How many pieces is it in? At 30k, I'd check the trans input splines, since its already apart.. youll see it talked about ad nauseum here :) I would suggest replacing the clutch slave. cheap and easy insurance.

sweatmark already answered everything =D>

I have only a comment on the ABS. that's a personal thing. I like having it, but I am also kind of a purist when it comes to motorcycles. I probably will not replace when/if it goes byebye. It has had a few hiccups that has me thinking about it. If it works, keep it, but It isnt necessary. and its megabills to replace.

I hope that we find an answer to the paint.

I have an '02 that came Dakar/Ferro, with a fully ferro frame and black engine/tranny/FD.

There are a few scratches that I would like to touch up.

I decided to work on the wiring and got her sorted except for these 2 connectors. I cant determine what or where they go.
Both have the same black 2 pin connector ,1 black and brown wire, both are 2 ft long and the PO cut them off of ???
They are coming out of the harness under the fuel tank facing aft. I cant find them on any wire diagram.
Im not clear on how to insert an image in the post without linking to a host site.

and laughing at being ft lauderdale...never needing heated grips. Cutting the wires...thats ONE way to disable them lol

They (grips) might have a short that causes the fuse to blow. I once had a BMW E34 525it with double sunroof that didn't work. I opened the headliner and the control unit was not only unplugged, but gone altogether. I guess the owner didn't want to take any chances on it staying open ever again.

For the headlight low beam I would strongly suggest dropping in an HID kit. I used a factory Hella ballast/ignitor from an Audi A6 that I had laying around and a high quality 4500K H1 HID bulb (Morimoto 35W) from theretrofitsource.com (No affiliation). I used a D2S --> AMP adapter so I could run the Hella ballast with the aftermarket bulb. Made my own harness to plug the factory wiring into. The results were impressive, beam pattern just like the factory HID lights in my Audi. Razor sharp cutoff and much improved foreground intensity over the factory halogen.

Thanks for the bulb info ROXTER, there is a burn spot on the hi lens I will need to look at, but now I am back into the wiring. I removed the fuse box and found a number of corroded terminals. I have ordered new ones but need to make a device to remove the old ones. I found the part number for the terminals on a old posting here but cant find any tool to remove them.

Anything regarding paint....I would contact Holt BMW in Athens,Oh.

Have bought paint from them, & always perfect....if you tell them the items you are painting...they will even makeup a proper amount "kit" for you ...reducing waste . And they send along, hardener, reducer, clearcoat & mixing instructions etc.

An update on the basketcase.
Replaced a ton of terminals on the relays and fuses. The tool to remove the terminals from the holder is the Lisle 557780 Ford Terminal Tool. Dont try it without .
Replaced a couple relays and all the fuses.
Ignition switch was bad , so I wired in DTDP toggle for the time being.
Replaced the Hall Effect plate. Both top and bottom tested bad. Got a used one.
Removed the Air box to access the clutch hose end on the transmission and will be leaving it off and getting some pods.
The ABS system looked like an accident waiting to happen, did the ABSectamy.
The alternator isnt putting out so she is on the curb.
Removed the silencer to get to the wheel and threw it out.
She runs good on the kickstand,
