I am back on a R1150R. Questions

Post by Remow2112 »

Hi all,

I was on here before when I had a black 2004 R1150R. Sold that off in my quest to become a R1200GS guy. Well, I am back to a 2004 Copper Rockster!!!

How do I tell if it has had a an ABSectomy?
How does the speedo work on this bike? I am pretty sure my speedo is off.
Does anyone have a chart of speedo reading to RPM for these bikes?

Thanks,
Dan...

-if it has no abs, when you turn the key on, you will NOT hear a "WHIRRRRRR" as it cycles it's servo, and when you hold the brakes.. save for that, just look below the tank, for the big brick servo, directly forward of the battery tray.

-speedo on the rockster comes from front wheel???? it does on the 1150r. not sure its different.

if ABS has been deleted, they could buggered the speedo?

-unsure on rockster speed/rpm. pretty sure it has a lower top gear than 1150's. 4000rpm would be about 70-ish?

good luck.

1. Look at wheels: ABS rings? Look at final drive: casing has either

(a) iABS wheel speed Hall sensor at approx 1 o'clock position (top vent at 12 o'clock), which senses the ABS ring attached to rear wheel;
or (b) non-ABS-spec rear wheel speed magnetic sensor that is positioned to measure special trigger wheel inside the final drive.

Your bike was likely an ABS bike if it has (a), and should have the Integral ABS servo/pump module located under fuel tank, in front of the battery. Module missing or disconnected, then ABS-ectomy.

No ABS rings on wheels? Then non-ABS

2. R1100S/Rockster speedo operates via pulse signals from (a) or (b) sensors. By design, the OE speedometers are "off" or inaccurate, showing higher velocity reading than actual.

3. No chart for RPM/gear/velocity. If you want speedometer accuracy, then add-on modification is required.

duh didnt even think to look for the abs ring.... :/

FWIW the radar detector(cobra iradar) that I have, connects to my i-phone via bluetooth, and uses a GPS speedo. I leave it on all the time for accuracy, and, turns out my speedo is SLIGHTLY optimistic LOL (3mph high at 80mph) there's plenty of cheap or free apps that will do the same. even my running app does it if forget to turn it off. amazing the calories you can burn at 60mph vs 6.....

grab a phone or gps, make your own chart. :)
