After market instrument cluster?

Hey guys, looking for some advice on the wiring for the instrument cluster. I want to trim down the front end, reduce that huge cluster and wind guard to a more simplified and smaller profile cluster -- is this possible?
I read somewhere the challenge would be in keeping all of the sensors working or thinking they are or the bike might not even start up. I have never done anything electrical on a bike, but I do know how to work on electrical systems (primarily guitar amps and such). I dont have the manual so i cant take a look, but has anyone attempted this?
