Re: Rear tire locked up while riding.

Typically it is caused by over heating. The bike gets hot, the piston siezes, the rear wheel locks up and you come to a sudden stop. You get off our bike, scratch your head, curse and wonder what the F. After a while you give it a try (it has now cooled down and the piston is free), it starts up an...

Re: Rear tire locked up while riding.

Well as a little update I have some one more knowledgeable about this kind of thing working on it. Tore it down and came to the conclusion that the issue is not the drive shaft and the grinding noise is coming from the transmission (dun dun DUUNNN). He did some preliminary transmission check going t...

Re: Rear tire locked up while riding.

OK, well after getting home from work i can say that it was'nt me hitting the break unless i also caused the clinking, clunking noise and vibration coming from the transmission/drive shaft. *sigh* Now i gotta tear it down and determine what exactly broke. But this might be the end for my 1150r =\ th...

Re: Rear tire locked up while riding.

correct, no ABS. I suppose its not out of the question that i hit the rear brake. It just REALLY freaked me out lol. Riding it back home everything seemed just fine like nothing had happened. And thinking about it more, if i started to hit the brake and the bike starting to drastically slow down, re...

Rear tire locked up while riding.

So my 02 r1150r and me are going down the road about 30-40mph slow down and down shift for a slight turn, accel and go to shift up when the whole bike like seizes up an the back end starts going out from under me. I pull off to the side and notice that the bike is actually turned off. Shift into neu...

Re: Where can I get an oil filter??

I saw the Bosch filter at advanced auto parts in VA, the same one i got from Beemerboneyard.com which is an awesome site BTW. I got a 12k kit from them with all of the o-rings crush rings and filters needed.

Re: Are these things normal?

I ride at relatively lower RPM's 2-3k when I'm cruising. Are there any noticeable indications there may be a carbon buildup? grogginess when acceling or noises?

Can you use one of those fuel additives to clear it out?

update **

Well, we got the bearings pressed onto the gear for the final drive, replaced all of the O-rings and seals and pieced her back together. It took about an hour to get back together and riding again. now there's no grinding or anything its as smooth as ever :) thanks for your input guys!

in all honesty, the work to get the bearing and gears out is pretty easy. I'm just not much of a gear head.

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing seems dusty

I see now they are down to $75 at MAX BMW parts fiche. yea, the old man paid a lot more... a lot more, than that before i could stop him. but oh well, as long as I can get it back together =) i wanted to ask you how long, and how...

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing seems dusty

well we got the bearings on order. my dad got them from a bearing shop. the small tapered bearing was a reasonable cost, but the large one was not. the closest BMW shop was closed on Monday and he had ordered them from the shop before i could compare costs, but it seemed a bit strange that the large...

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing seems dusty

Armo Don't panic, you are doing a great job, I see that you can get this back together easily. Actually what you have experienced is "bearing cage failure" and that has been common to some of the oilheads, specially the earlier ones. I se them often in my line of work and is usually cause...

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing seems dusty

That's true. But that's just the easy part. It might work fine after doing that. But then again the inside bearing on the other side of the drive gear just might be bad as well. Wait and let Rob check in here on this. He knows of a way to check it without taking it all the way off, I'm sure. Your p...
