Re: I'M STILL ALIVE
Wayne, I am a retired engineer who has been in the saddle for about 50 years. Now on a R1150R. Just wanted to give you a word of encouragement and also say that what has happened to you is tough, but it will add something to your life. I have been in situations many times where I was forced to hand ...

Exactly. This design looks more automotive, where it will be hidden under a hood, not with the sexy curves and form that looks good on a bike. May be functional, but it just does not look like bike hardware.

Re: Say goodbye to the air-cooled BMW boxer engine . . .
That photo looks like a CAD model. Not a picture of a real engine. Modern engineering no longer makes hand drawn drawings, but 3D CAD models of all parts, and then assembles them into the final assembly that you see on the screen. That does not mean that they have not already made the parts and buil...

Re: Say goodbye to the air-cooled BMW boxer engine . . .
Your comments are good ones. Actually, there are also other issues. Oil is not a good coolant because of it's very low specific heat. To get the same amount of BTUs transfered with oil, you have to blast very large volumes through the system. Then there are problems of having hot spots around the ex...

Re: Say goodbye to the air-cooled BMW boxer engine . . .
Writing as a professional product development Mechanical Engineer, BMW is in a real corner. The air / oil cooled design is doomed. Same for the Harley D V-twins except for their liquid cooled V-Rod. To control emissions, you have to have a much tighter control on head temperature, and that means liq...

Re: Hip Cramps
I thought I was the only one who got those terrible hip cramps. Worse when riding dirt bikes and had to lift legs off of pegs and forward when riding through deep ruts. Hip would cramp immediately. Only standing up on pegs would relieve them. Now I get them when I am on my R1150R if I am not careful...

Re: Final Drive
Yes, I was referring to the older oil head designs. I drive a R1150R. A lot of thought has gone into the newer design. That design has spacers available in .050mm increments (which would never be small enough for proper preload adjustment), but are fine for gear alignment. Although there is a lot of...

Re: Final Drive
Mark, Lighting The Fire You have a good point regarding the surging. Again, BMW got themselves into a design corner going back many years. Emission requirements drove them towards lean mixtures. Because they monitor only one cylinder (TPS), and all injectors are not perfectly matched, things can som...

Re: Final Drive
See my message of 4/11. As for lubrication, these bearings are ball bearings that roll , not journal bearings that slide. Therefore, lubrication is not so important for a ball type bearing. That is why similar rolling bearings on car or truck axles require no lubrication change for the life of the b...

Re: Final Drive
I agree. The inside wheel bearing is of a type designed for precision machine tool spindles that have preload adjusted with fine thread nuts. Made by SKF, these are very high quality, angular, 15 degree contact angle, ball bearings, with dynamic load ratings (about 5000 pounds), far beyond anything ...

Is this on a R1150R? If so, what is the part number of the windshield? I am looking for a tall windshield for my R.

Re: I am giddy, I am so dang giddy, I might pee
I'm in the North West and ride all year around. Except for snow and ice which never showed up this year.
My K75 has a full fairing and a tall windshield. I sit in a little bubble of still dry air. Very comfortable down to freezing. Only way to go.

Re: 200k mile club?
Yep, people buy what they want, not what they need. And end up paying way too much. I paid $3000 for my K75RT. Now has 67K on it. Engine will go to at least 200K without a problem. Good handling, great brakes, ---the only thing against it is it is 24 years old. Looks like it is 5 years old. After us...

Re: R1150R windshield
Yeah, I have seen their website before. Nice looking and reek of quality but ----they are sure pricey$$$$$$. Lesser windshields are in the $150 to 250 range. These guys are double that and more. Do you have one? Are you connected with the company???
