Re: Lowest Engine Revs When Riding

Skegness - it's so bracing!
When they power up the four merlins on the Canadian Warplane Heritage Lanc, it's like a tractor beam is switched on, everyone on the airfield is drawn to the source of the noise. Music any composer should be proud of.

Re: Which R to buy, part deux...

Do you know anything of the service history of the bike? My 1150R ate its splines at 60k kms which anecdotally seems to be about the usual time, but before my ownership. I looked around for a bike that had had all the issues done and I'm very happy with it. Find out what you can about the individual...

Re: Newbie Owners

I bought my '02 1150R after searching for a bike that had had all the problems. Took a year almost, but got an ABS-free bike whose owner had spent nearly the selling price over the previous two years having the transmission and final drive rebuilt after failure. The gearbox input splines failed as d...

Re: 850 or 1150

Johan, you make me at 6' 4" look small. Here's my suggestion: look for a good, used Kawasaki 650 KLR. They're rangy beasts, with lots of leg room and you'll have no trouble planting your feet on the ground with that inseam. KLRs are simple and cheap and if you drop it, it's hard to do ser...

Re: RED transmission oil?

The only reason the oil is red is because the manufacturer put red dye in it. That way they can charge more for their "special" oil and thousands of testimonials on the web telling of the superiority of red oil proves their wisdom. As others have said, as long as it meets BMW's specs, it's...

Re: Buying R 1150 R....

Jose, your question does not suggest an easy answer. Some 1150Rs have had problems with failed rear drives and gearbox input splines, but many have not, provided that regular maintenance, including lubeing the splines is performed. Splines need to be re-lubed about every 60,000 km, so check to see i...

Re: New to BMW, and my intro

BMW cases for the 1150R are often for sale on ebay: do a search under motorcycles for 1150R and see what comes up. There are at least two sets for sale right now. I use a Givi top case, an E45, because I already had it, but I'd prefer something in the Givi line that was more harmonious with the fact...

Re: Final drive gear lube

I know nothing about oils and nothing about gears.
So, why would an oil filled with stickum be advantageous over 80w-90?
Or is it like the design of fishing lures, the red stickum catches the purchaser, not the wear (or fish)?

Re: Time to check your antifreeze

Speaking of tires, I've often wondered why BMW doesn't try to sell us some of that excellent German air. I remember my Dad, a veteran of Dunkirk, pointing out that all the bombed out/shot up German transport in post D-Day film footage had flat tires. That, he said, was because the Brits and Canadian...

Re: any advice for NY to Montreal

Don't know about closer to NYC, but you definitely want to go through the Adirondacks and cross over into Quebec around Rouse's Point. There are plenty of backroads in QC you can pootle around on before heading to Montreal. Get a map and follow it.

Re: 2002 R1150R Value

As to value, it depends. Here in Ontario, Canada, I recently paid $5,700 for my 2002 1150R. It came with BMW side cases and two windshields. Prices in Canada tend to be higher than in the US, so bear that in mind. 5,000 miles on a nine year-old bike is not very much. What do you know of the service ...

Re: My long wait is over

Thanks, guys.
I do have one question: am I right in thinking that the 1150GS hand protectors are a straight bolt-on fitting for the R? I'm kinda used to the protection provided by the ones on the 'Strom.
See you at the Rally, Twinpatrick!

My long wait is over

Hi, folks, my name is Tony and I've been lurking on this board for a while, learning about these and other Beemers. My patience has paid off, for I am now the new owner of a 2002 R1150R, in Atlanta Blue with the yellow seat. At least I think it's Atlanta Blue, a pale blue metallic. It's a non-ABS mo...

Re: Nimbus Bike

Fascinating bikes, with their strap-iron frames. Originally made for the Danish army, I believe, but I could be wrong.
There are several here in Ontario. I love watching the valves and rockers tippy-tapping away at idle.
Cheers,
Tony

Re: What will fit me best?

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm 6' 4" with a 34 inseam and I'm wondering if an R1150R with standard seat is going to be comfortable. I did ride an 1150R a few years ago, enjoyed it and I'm looking for a less complicated modern Beemer to join my '77 RS in the garage. I do plan on putting on p...

GIVI Luggage

Well hello. I'm new to this board as I'm considering swapping my 1K V-Strom for an R1200R. Not a straight swap, obviously. :( Anyway, I'd like to use my Givi E36 side bags and E45 top case, if I do make a change and the bike doesn't come with bags. Givi only lists the V35 bags for panniers. Is there...
