Re: No more drive (Another Spline failure)
Here's one data point for the hub spacer repair: I found myself in a similar situation a little over a year ago. My girlfriend and I were ~350 miles from home in an area with no cell phone service when the splines failed. Sucks. Had to rent a Uhaul truck and trailer to get it home. I also was quoted...

Re: Bye bye clutch splines :(
Update: Two Sundays ago, I finally found time to re-assemble my bike. Actually, I've just been waiting for some cool weather (my garage gets baking hot in the summer). The whole dis-assembly/re-assembly experience is not so bad which is nice because I plan to keep the bike. As for the extent of the ...

Re: Bye bye clutch splines :(
If you can picture moving the clutch plate 6mm deeper you will end up on "virgin" part of the input shaft and worn part would stay in the middle. This is indeed what I am picturing right now :) (hopefully I can get a few more miles in before sending the gearbox off for the inevitable inpu...

Re: Bye bye clutch splines :(
The housing for the clutch slave in the gearbox looks nasty. Dried up clutch fluid but no gearbox oil. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-3rLRyub6BGs/U5i-Mq2cgWI/AAAAAAAAAvw/fTICclJ1LB8/w727-h673-no/Clutch+slave+housing.JPG Clutch slave cylinder. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-yppbjY3ibwc/U5i-Oi...

Re: Bye bye clutch splines :(
I visited the local BMW/HD dealer yesterday. The new BMW/HD service manager implied that I would be better off doing the work myself ($2700 quote for clutch replacement only; wouldn't be able to start on it until the end of the year). I'm now doing a little searching to find an independent mechanic ...

Re: Bye bye clutch splines :(
Thanks for the links! I typed the original post while my girlfriend and I were sitting at the coffee shop in Damascus, waiting for the tow truck. FYI, there is no AT&T service in Damascus but there is free WiFi at the coffee shop. I had to use a Google voice app to place calls to U Haul and BMW ...

Bye bye clutch splines :(
This morning we were approaching Damascus, VA and heard a grinding, rattling scream from below. No power; pulled over. No phone service. Hitched to town. No phone service. Riding the R1150R (2002, of course) has been perfect until now. Perfect amount of room for pillion and gear. Fun to ride. But sh...

Re: Greetings + questions
Thanks for the input. After continued practice, I've somehow figured out how to get it on the center stand with less effort. As for the tires, I replaced them with a set of inexpensive Conti Force Sport tires soon after I got the bike home. Not the best, but they'll make it through the summer. I was...

Re: Greetings + questions
The tank panniers are nice to have for extra storage and almost waterproof. I got them for my SV650 for a two up camping trip and ended up leaving them on until I sold it. Didn't have problems with the panniers sliding, they were easy to strap to the frame. I also had a Ventura Rack, which I'm reall...

Re: Greetings + questions
We arrived home in Louisville last night with the new (to me) bike! We left Hartford after lunch on Sat and got home yesterday evening, about 1200 miles total. We made our way down to the Skyline Drive in northern VA, but bailed on the BRP, deciding to hit a few back roads in WV instead. Fortunately...

Re: Greetings + questions
Funny that you mention that tool, here's the Crank Brothers version that I'll be bringing with me:

It reminds me that I should probably be bicycling instead, but oh well.

Re: Greetings + questions
Wow, that ironbutt list is great, but possibly not practical for my trip. My girlfriend is coming along for the ride, so pannier space will be limited, despite the fact that we're both only bringing minimal gear. We're checking a large SeaLine dry bag with most of our riding and camping gear, tools,...

Re: Greetings + questions
I've decided to go get the yellow '02 in CT and will be flying to Hartford this Friday evening, meeting the seller early Sat morning. If the bike matches the seller's description and there are no obvious issues or flashing lights, I'll be setting off to ride it through PA to VA, NC, TN and finally t...

Re: Greetings + questions
I truly appreciate your advice, and this forum for supporting such communication. I have emailed the seller, requesting more details about the service history, in particular, the iABS maintenance. I have my fingers crossed

Hi everyone, I've always been curious about BMWs and it looks like I'm about to find out. I'm planning a fly and ride to pick up a 2002 R1150R ABS "yellow jacket". It has ~12,300 mi on it, recently had the 12K service completed at Gengras BMW (Hartford, CT), has a small fairing, side cases...
