Re: Considering R1150R - newbie questions
I've just sold my 2003 single spark R1150R and bought a 2009 ST1300. The opposite direction than the poster. They are both great bikes but the comparison is the proverbial apples and oranges. The R is a great touring bike, once you change the seat, add luggage, windshield, driving lights, peg loweri...

Have you upgraded the timing chain tensioner on your left cylinder?

Re: is an 04's tail light just a standard 1157 bulb?
If anyone's interested, I'm selling a tail-light bulb on the buy/sell forum. It came out of my single spark non-ABS 2003 Roadster. Hardly used. Cyclegadgets LED 1157 Brake Light Bulb - Installed only to test functionality - $15 See thread here: http://www.r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=187...

Re: Seal Failure on Final Drive
Problem solved. It was a pinion seal. FWIW: Over the years, I've tried synthetic and dino in the FD and tranny without problems. I guess it was just time for the seal to go. Well, it's fixed now and, long story short, because of what was at hand, I now have synthetic in the tranny and dino in the FD...

Re: Seal Failure on Final Drive
My biggest concern is that the sludgy stain has appeared rather quickly. I changed all the fluids about three weeks ago (using synthetic in the FD and tranny - which shouldn't matter, right [-o< ). Thanks for the feedback, I'll wipe it down, check the oil level, keep an eye on it, and post any findi...

Seal Failure on Final Drive
I would like to tap into the collective wisdom of the forum. I noticed greasy oil deposits under the shaft housing today (hence the fingerprints in the the photo). I'm not sure if I'm looking at a leaking seal or a FD failure. If this is a seal that's failed, is this a project a self-taught wrench c...

Re: Kills at start up
+1 with the strange startup syndrome, I'm with Boxer. I suspect there's a bbq side-dish in the petrol. Bike was great last week, just had a TBS and all the trimmings, took a ride to the boonies, filled her up, and it's been hard mornings with this tankful.

Re: Anyone Own A Parabellum?
I'm interested to find out about the parabellum as well and interested in finding out people's experiences with them on long trips. BTW I don't want to hijack the thread, but I was also wondering if anyone had tried the Wunderlich Classic Roadster fairing?

Re: Rusty spark plug?!
Thanks for the explanation. I live up in the Pacific Northwest temperate rainforest (or used to be before all the subdivisions showed up) and it gets wet here a lot. I was also in Chicago last month, riding in a huge downpour, fjording urban rivers from Lombard to the North Side - water up to my boo...

Re: Let's make a list of big $ repairs
I agree, it has not been cheap. The next thing to do is to decide whether to try to hit 100k miles with it, or to buy a Honda and start over. Any suggestions? FWIW, if I'd spent so much money on my bike I'd have to keep it. But seriously, with all respect, I wouldn't have spent that much in the fir...

Shocks
Used OEMs (11,000 miles on 'em), $95 each from parted out bike, free shipping from Denver to Seattle
Labor. Installed by local indie-wrench (including a few other little maintenance tasks) $200
Total: $390 - A bargain which frees up money for new tyres.

Re: Rusty spark plug?!
I had the same experience last week. It was only surface rust in a few places on the nut, I change my plugs every year regardless of mileage and don't worry too much about it. BTW I did replace the used 3923s (which, apart from the spots of rust on the nuts, looked OK) with new 3923s, gapped to .032...

What's your spark plug gap? Make sure it's .032.

I tried to repeat the problem today, but the bike behaved itself. Thanks for the input, I'll check out the suggestions and post any findings.

Occasional false neutral at 4,500-5,000 rpm
2003 R1150R Single Spark, Non-ABS, just over 39,000 miles. During the past couple of weeks, my bike's been popping out of gear during hard acceleration. It's only happened a handful of times over the past few weeks, usually while accelerating on a freeway on-ramp, in 4th or 5th gear, over 4,500 to a...

I prefer the hard wire approach
I have a TomTom Rider 2 (my next unit will be a Garmin) hard wired to the battery. My RAM mount is permanently bolted to the handlebars, above the ignition, so the GPS looks as if it's part of the instrument cluster, and isn't too obtrusive. If you hard-wire, you don't have to carry any additional c...

Handlebar master cylinders
03 R1150R Non-ABS. I've changed the brake fluid several times, but have a question that's still nagging me. My particular Clymer manual seems to have omitted the correct handlebar position for the R1150R. Should the bike be on the centerstand or sidestand? Are the bars left, right or straight ahead?...
