Know your bike 101 - Caliper bolts (In honor of boxermania)

Post by DSKYZD »

In honor of our old friend Al aka boxermania, I present this little poll about torque values for brake caliper bolts front and rear. How well do you know your bike?

I just had new rubber put on last week and I took the wheels off to have that done at my tire place. So I remembered the 30nm. But normally I never remember the torque on anything so I am constantly referring to the little manual.

I've just replaced the pads this weekend. So here's a clue - the front is different to the rear :D :D :D

...and the clues lead us to different answers.

Whether you voted correctly or not depends on the source you trust.

As Boxer has shown, the little service manual shows 30Nm front and rear. However, the R1150R Repair manual lists 40 for the rear in both the torque values table at the beginning of the book (p.9) and in the procedure section for removing and refitting the rear brake caliper (p. 34.6). The front value is 30 for all sources.

So which one MORE correct?

My little Maintenance Intruction Manual that comes with the bike lists in Sec 2 page 34 that the rear wheel brake caliper screws are 40nm. It shows a pic of the BMW brake calipers whereas Boxer's picture shows the Brembo brake calipers. Therefore we can assume that the different calipers have different torque settings - ie BMW = 40nm and Brembo = 30 nm.
Do the different years have different brake calipers? Mine is a 2003 :?: :?:

As tight as I can get them with my 36" ratchet. I would guess it is something like 200 NM.

Croc, you may be on to something.

My 2003 has BMW Calipers. My little Service manual says 30Nm and looks just like Boxer's with Brembo calipers pictured for the rear. It has BMW calipers pictured for the front.

I know someone with a Rockster who confirmed their little service manual says 40Nm for the rear.

So it may be that they either changed the spec around 2004, or they changed the spec when they began using the BMW "branded" calipers. Hell, maybe BOTH, or NEITHER. The Repair Manual I refer to says it was printed in Germany 07/01. What do you think of that?

All this brings back the memory of the first time I removed my rear brake caliper. I didn't think I was going to be able to do it with the tools in the kit, even using the "extension" for extra leverage. It's never been that hard since. I would have done 30Nm the times I've the rear wheel off. I don't know that I've had the dealer remove the rear tire since the first time I did it, but they removed it when they my first set of Z6's on.

What will do when I put my rear tire on? 30 or 40? Hmmm, couldn't tell you right now. Maybe I'll repost once I do it.

My manual was printed in Germany - 2002 and states 3rd edition.
Who knows :?: :?:

Caliper Logos

Post by marecycling »

I believe that the calipers that have the BMW logo are the Evo Brake System calipers, which provide better stopping, less lever pressure needed to activate, and lighter weight. Pads may be replaced without removing the calipers. These designated calipers have the lower torque values, both front and rear. I believe they were introduced in the 2002 model year.
