Stubel Airhorn

Post by Airman »

I've just ordered a Stubel compact airhorn from California Sport Touring. Has anyone got a good picture of their installation so I can work up a bracket ?

I used the bracket from the R. I grinded of the corner so I could swing the bracket to the side. This way the horn will fit. The bracket is really a series of plates that make it a semi solid piece. Don't have the bike now, so no pics. Sorry.

Same here. I used the existing bracket but do not have pictures.

I assume you are talking about the compact stebel air horn? It is an awesome horn, BTW.

Thanks guys. I'm trying to make some simple safety upgrades to the bike. My first mods are the Stubel Compact airhorn, the Phillips H4 headlight bulb and the Brake! LED tail light assembly.

A great horn.

I fitted mine under the tank where I believe the ABS would be on an ABS-equipped bike.

In order to mount the horn at the recommended angle (i.e. in-built compressor upright), I made an very simple square-cornered C-shaped bracket which screwed to the horn but also supported it underneath and bolted the assembly in place with a single bolt. (Sorry I have no pics at the moment and and am not planning a tank removal for a week or two.

I also mounted under the tank where the ABS would be. I made a simple bracket from parts in the garage. I was worried that the sound might be muffled... no worries there.. it hurts when I test it!!

I took the stock horn off today. I see what you guys are talking about with the stock bracket. I think what I'm going to do is buy an "L" flat bracket. I think they use them to re-enforce corners on wood projects, gates and the like. I think with that I can install it straight in using the stock mounting post. Have to look at the wiring then. might wait until I install the AP-1 panel.

Just make sure you allow room for the forks to compress. There are occasional times when my front fender will hit the horn.

After taking a good look at it with the stock horn out I think the horn will tuck up in that cavity under the steering head nicely. I'm going to bend the "L" bracket right aft of the mount bolt tilting the horn a bit. I'll put up pictures when I get it done.

Hi guys & gals; I actually work at California Sport Touring (and, before you ask, NO this is not a solicitation or advertisement!). The horn you mention is a STEBEL Horn - made in Italy. They will make you sound like a cross between a freight train & an 18 wheeler. Or as one customer puts it: "it's my "get the *@#! out of my way" horn"! The May 2007 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News included a 3 page guide on how-to install the horn, which some may find helpful. I made copies and give them to customers who ask for guidance with the install. Suffice to say, some bikes are easier to do the install than others.
That being said, I haven't installed one on my own 2004 R1150R 'cause it's so tricky. Anyone got any tips? I'd love to see those pics.

If you're in the Hercules, CA area (about 18 miles north of Oakland; 15 miles south of Vallejo) stop in & say "hi". We carry all kinds of interesting stuff.

Peace-Out

Good the hear from you. You're right about the sound. I hooked mine to the battery and got an immediate demand from the wife. (inside the house) to stop it. I'm pretty pleased with it.
I'll post pictures when I get to it, but here's my basic take on installing it in the RR:
I intend to install the horn upright with the compressor part aft. The mount lug is a couple of inches to the right side, so since it's off center like that I decided to use an "L" bracket with the long leg running down the centerline of the horn and the short leg bolted to the lug on the horn. I'll bolt the forward end to the stock horn mounting stud. I may wait and install the AP-1 fuse box first, but if I don't the wiring looks simple. It comes with a relay; the two horn wires to close it, and the hot wire from the battery to the relay and one to the horn. Looks simple to do. I will say that California Sport Touring was competitive on price and got my horn and lights right out.

@ airman

I am also looking at tucking it into the cavity that you have spotted.
does your alu' frame have a hole drilled into it on the RHS ( if you were sat on the bike)??

I was thinking of a 'C' shaped bracket to envelop the horn unit with a captive nut along its spine into which i maybe able to get a fixing via that drilled hole.

I reckon a horn unit fitted in that cavity would be pretty neat. =D>

Fuses can save your bike. You might consider installing one between your battery and your horn (best before the relay)...

Whilst i've had the 'tank off etc doing the snorkel and airbox mod' ( re: cyclerob)
i thought i'd look a little deeper at mounting in that cavity below the steer head.

my stubel nautilus won't fit...... unless i split the compressor and horn into 2 units!!
there is not enough room for both

If i can find an adaptor pipe/fitting to make the parts remote, it maybe possible to mount the horn unit on the existing horns bracket that fits to the frame.

i'm going to try and sort some pics now..it saves loads of typing w-i-t-h 1 f-i-n-g-e-r

I have not actually looked at this location in regard to the Stubel Compact, but saw a picture online of an airhorn mounted under the Beak. I don't see that the stock location is a difficult mount. I intend to use a simple "L" bracket and perhaps bend it up near the front stud to tilt the horn a bit and give more vertical clearance. I'm just getting the wiring harness and AP-2 fuse panel ordered up to power the horn and driving lights, I'll probably do the whole install in one long weekend. Well, the horn and AP-2 anyhow. I haven't figured out how to pay for the PIAA's yet.

It will fit, even did it. Using the original bracket and mounting point.=D> Just need to grind off the edges of the factory mounting plates at he corners, mount at the angle to fit and reverse mount it down. I think.

Good luck. If you think the PIAAs are expensive just wait till you have to replace a bulb!!! I just bought my third replacement bulb . They are $41.00 each time one burns out.

Gypsy,

Thanks for the warning. I can help you with the burnout /cost problem... I'm assuning you're talking about the PIAA headlight bulb? Go to this place http://www.casporttouring.com/store/mer ... de=Philips
and get the Phillips Vision Plus 50. Two for about $30. I just installed this bulb and I'm seriously impressed. I did a headlight and tailight upgrades and I feel much safer now. The PIAA 910's are intended as deer repellent when I start the long trips I have planned for this summer. I had a couple of bad scares over in Montana last summer and I'd like a little warning.
But back to bulbs; I think the higher output lights burn out quicker. That' why it's nice to get a spare when you order. If you still favor the PIAA bulbs, pack one of these Phillips in the bag in case of failure on the road. I'm not sure what bulb the 910's have in them, H3's ? I hope they are not tooo expensive.

Hey Guys

This link has a PDF download on installing the Nautilus into an 1150GS. It may provide some insight to installing on an 1150R

Gypsy try your local off road store for PIAA lights. My local one, Central Four Wheel Drive, had two H4s for $49. My local beemer shop had one for $41. Big difference.
