Ceramic Coated Header Winter Project Complete

I really like the ceramic coating. That said, when I first started with BMWs, I thought it was refreshing that they *didn't* have chromed exhaust. Kind of sets them apart from the Harley "butt-jewelry" crowd and makes them look more like a serious machine than a bling-ey fashion statement...just my $.02...I maintain my bikes rigorously but really don't care much at all what they look like...

can you get a "blu'd" coating??

I would prefer chrome blue to ss brown but didn't know there was an option. Anyway, my dealer had only the one bike on the floor and it has what it has and I'm happy.

A gunsmith should be able to get you some noxious chemicals to turn any ferrous metal blue.

I can appreciate the anti-butt-jewelry sentiment, but don't think BMW doesn't care about aesthetics (at least in their definition of the word). Look at those beautifully made valve covers.

Then look at the ugly pipes right next to them. Doesn't make sense to me. The bike's got plenty of power, I'd gladly add a couple of pounds for coaxial headpipes.

So, add next to no weight, gain a little oomph, and get shiny and durable pipes. Go with the ceramic!

The ceramic coated pipes look good - Ive managed to find a company called Powerkote here in South Africa who can do the same thing for around R:1500.00 ($ 187.00) so next week pipes come off and go for coating

BigEasy, any difficulty slipping the muffler back on after the ceramic coating?

Not Big Easy but I just had the exhaust on my /5 ceramic coated. The coating is extreamly thin, the pipes went back into the heads and the muffler when on without any problems. I got a black satin finish and it came out the way I wanted, now all remains to be seen is how well it holds up on the road.

Interesting,I got my 2012 with cromed headers,and cat but the muffler is brushed stainless steel.I did not ordered bike that way,but just got it like that.Personally I don't care about discoloration(blue header)-actually I like it.

It would be nice if the stainless steel headers turned blue. I have always associated classic BMWs with blue pipes, and I like it, too. The ss brown Is so ugly I have considered buying chrome headers (my muffler already is). THEN my R1200R will be a classic.

I am surprised that so many people here like blued pipes! I thought I was the only one.

What Harry said, slipped on like butter. Got about 20,000 miles on it and am still pretty happy with the coating. It has discolored some but it looks better than the brown they were turning when I did it.

Well, pulled the headers last Monday and delivered them to PolDyn here in Houston for a black ceramic coating. Fingers crossed!
