Fuel Canister and Valve

Re: Fuel Canister and Valve
hoses on my 05 were reversed and sent wash and rainwater(there is a drain around fuel filler ring) right into cannister ,actually started to rot out the bottom.i replaced it with a new cannister and of course fixed the hose routing situation.bike has a hose routing decal/sticker on the rear fender under the seat.
Re: Fuel Canister and Valve
I have since learned that Carbon canisters (vapor recovery systems) are only required on Motorcycles in CA and NY. It is not a crime to operate a motorcycle without them elsewhere. So it is a crime to remove them?

OK - Good comments in favor of retaining & maintaining the cannister vapor recovery system.
Aside from some not-quite-necessary weight and complexity the system adds to the bike, and obvious eyesore un-elegance, there's one aspect of the R1150R's vapor emissions cannister kludge that really bugs me:
The vapor recovery system is plumbed to the throttle bodies downstream of the throttle plate. That means a leak somewhere in the cannister system can cause a nasty lean condition in one or both cylinders, contributing to or causing detonation and piston damage in a high CR, expensive-to-repair motor.
That's reason enough for my cannisterectomy.

Re: Fuel Canister and Valve
I thought it was ugly too...So I put it under the gas tank in the place where the ABS is located on ABS equipped bikes. I like the idea of it not being smelly in the garage. But now that I hear its a federal crime, I wonder if I will get mistaken for a law-breaker and arrested at some National Park. Then I will have to remove my gas tank to prove I still am in compliance....I'll have to think about that for a second or two...

I forget where I saw this.... Paint it blue, put a NOx sticker on it and you can scare all the crotchrocket owners...maduko wrote: ... I agree, the only thing wrong with the carbon trap is they're ugly...

Keep the cannister on. It is ugly but serves a purpose
Subarus are ugly, but good, functional cars.
Now my question is, does the cannister ever need replacing, servicing or cleaning?
I do not remember seeing anything related to the cannister in the BMW maintenance schedule.

My '99 ducati had one. My '05 Kawasaki has one. Nothing new. Sometimes they can get full of fuel in a tipover.Buckster wrote:When did other manufacturers start putting charcoal cannisters on their bikes?
I was unaware that other bikes have this feature.

What's a lentini? And can it be served without sauce?I did a lentini
Re: Fuel Canister and Valve
Boxer
A lentini is my favorite spagetti sauce served with 2 noodles that connect the TB's, no for real it is an adjustment that is documented in the site where you have to reset the cable play on both of the TB's and also in the fast idle setting.
This was done because I still have issues with my ride at Idle....

Re: Fuel Canister and Valve
Well, not likely. The vacuum ports in the TBs contain orfices that regulate the air flow, providing a restriction and control of the air by-passed at the throttle plates. As such, the lean condition you speak of cannot occur. Also, if the ports suffer some fouling or dirt, they restrict air flow even further thereby failing in a safe manner....The Bing folks have this one pretty well covered.....sweatmark wrote: The vapor recovery system is plumbed to the throttle bodies downstream of the throttle plate. For the record, Rob Lentini was a BMW owner, rider and officer in the BMWMOA. He was considered one of the most knowledgible boxer owners/riders of his time. He died of cancer a few years back, not long after I purchased my first new BMW. While I never met him, I communicated with him routinely while learning about my BMW. He was very generous with his time and knowledge. His articles and tech notes regarding early boxers (oilheads) are still very appropriate today. He helped many boxer owner/riders understand and cure surging and other driveability issues.Boxer wrote:What's a lentini? And can it be served without sauce?I did a lentini

Re: Fuel Canister and Valve
I did exchange E-Mails regarding TPS voltage settings with Rob Lentini long ago and was both surprised and saddened about the news of his death several months later.

Re: Fuel Canister and Valve
When shopping for my R, I asked the salesman, "What's that?"
He said, "Charcoal cannister."
I said, "Excellent."
Ugly? but my bike has a beak on it, and some garish chrome guages, and came with a huge butt flap.
I am buying a another Subaru soon also. I must be addicted to ugly.

I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...
