Engine overheating on R1200R
I just bought a new 07 R1200R. When riding at highway speeds I noticed the engine temperature gauge registered one bar above the middle mark. When I changed to city driving it went back down to the middle mark. Is this normal? I would note it was approximately 85 degrees out. Is there a history or problem with this engine overheating when being driven at highway speeds over a long period of time? thanks.

Re: Engine overheating on R1200R
That's not "overheating" - normal temperature range on the hexhead engine is between the two extended hash-marks.. below the bottom one the engine is still cold. Above the top one is too hot.

Mine normally runs 5-6 bars (one above the cold mark) - even when riding in > 100F temps, and with a stone guard over the oil cooler (which reduces airflow.) I have seen no sign of any overheating. The cooling on the engine appears to be more than adequate for anything less than a ride in Hades.

Re: Engine overheating on R1200R
I agree with Don, what you are describing is normal. Yes the engines run a bit hotter when you ride fast, but that is normal. After all the engine is working harder the faster you ride. But even here in South Florida, where it is more than a bit hot right now (really HOT actually), these bikes run at safe and controlled temperatures. I have a whole lot of Beemer miles over many years and believe my R1200R manages heat better than any in previous experience.
