hello,
I currently own a R1150RT 2002, like the bike but would like something closer to the sporty side....
I previously owned: VStrom DL1000, CBR100RR, VFR800, YZF600R

so here is the dilemna: I can have a very good price for a brand new R1200R 2007 .....but with no ABS....
with computer, center stand and luggage bracket for $12900cdn (about the same in US $)....a 2008 with the same equipment is almost $3000 more (close to $16000)

So, should I?
any thoughts?
advise?


and for hard case...BMW or Givi?

Mike for 3 grand less I'd most likly own the 07,with BMW side case's[if you want to take them off, bike still looks great].I have an 07 with abs love it,but for 3 grand a test ride would be in order for sure.Are you used to ABS on your previous bikes?if not you might not know what your missing.

I won't buy a bike without ABS, and I'm not alone in that. What that means is the market for eventual resale of a non-ABS bike is less than one equipped with ABS. You also will typically get the full cost of the ABS back when you resell the bike - they're worth that much more and are that sought after.

Just some food for thought - you might save now, but it may cost you later.

Not a good deal. For one thing, like Don, I wouldn't buy a new bike without ABS.

Last Saturday I looked at a new 2007 (bought from another dealer's stock) with all those options, plus ABS, that the dealer wanted $12,995 for.

The dealer told me BMW NA wouldn't let them list the bikes (they bought two) as new, but they are new - have never been registered and have < 10 miles on them.

I didn't think their asking price is a good deal since another local dealer has a 2008 with 600 miles on it with ABS (trade in on a new RT), 600 mile service completed, for $12,500.

A 2007 bike is now two yrs old whether it is new or not, so it should be offered at a substantial discount from a 2008 or 2009.

yeah,
I have the BS on my RT
the thing is, the dealer is offering me more than anyone else for my RT....(at least $1K)
and finance for the R1200R is 1,95% so things add up.....
tough choice :-)

I'd get the price down more and buy it. I've had more than 6 bikes and this one is the first w/ ABS. Only because I had no choice.

i experienced a crash (long time ago) because the wheel locked (non ABS bike) and then experiencing emergency situations with ABS (no problems...you are in control all the time).....I would never by a bike without it......so i'd have to agree with people above who say ABS is essential...helps with resale also....you need to ask yourself why is the 07 bike still available....it's almost 09 after all.....the answer would be that BMW riders shy away from the new bikes without ABS.....just my2c....i'd definately pay $3K if I could avoid the crush mentioned above.....

ABS only has to pay off once to make it worthwhile. Aside from the value of the wrecked bike, hospital costs, lost work all will quickly make the $3k difference seem trivial. And at a $3k break for what will be a 2 year old bike the minute it goes out the door of the dealership - that's no bargain. I would guess you'd be lucky to get $11k on a 2007 non-ABS bike right now.

That means he doesn't want the R sitting on his showroom floor any more and he thinks he can easily move your RT. Since he thinks he can do that - why don't you try selling the RT directly.

Again - a sign they want to get rid of the R. If they can't sell it after over a year - it seems pretty obvious that non-ABS bikes just don't sell. New, used - they are a tough sell.

here (Quebec, Canada) we have a sale taxe of 13% that I wouldn't pay on an exchange (so I pay taxes only on the difference between the two price, (R1200R - R1150Rt) +13%txs )

you are right, that is why they are making a much better price and a better credit rate....that helps bringing the bike price down...I know that I will have less when I resale it.....question is: will it make up for all the rebate they are "giving" for this deal......as far of the ABS....I like it, but then again, most motorcycle doesn't have ABS....half the GS, half the R, almost no F##xx have the ABS.....I like ABS and I like linked break....most of my ex-bike did not have that...same as traction control.....so, again, tough choice :-))))

I suspect things must be different in Canada than the US. In the US - I'd guess 90% of the BMWs in the showrooms have ABS. Dealers just don't order ones without it. Mebbe BMW sends all non-ABS bikes north.. AFAIK - the RT, it's standard, the GS it might as well be.. and most of the F's are coming in with it.

If you want ABS, it's not a tough choice at all..

If you want ABS, it's not a tough choice at all..
:-) funny, here I've never saw a F with ABS....in fact the biggest dealer doesn't even order them with it.....RT are, of course, all ABS...and all Ks too :-)

my tough choice is: should I take the good price or wait next spring and buy a 2009 at full price.....(in the 2009 I will then have to decide if I want the ABS or not...with the 2007 it is no ABS :-)))) )

Find a good price on a used R1200R and save the money like that. Buy it and ride.

Good thought - isn't there one for sale on the for-sale section? Only problem might be importing it to Canada..
