Tall windshield input?
I have a new-to-me 2002 R1150R with a BMW touring windshield. I need/want more wind protection over the top, and am researching different shields. The bike has a stock seat that I will probably change for something higher to open up my leg position. I'm about 6' tall and like to ride with my helmet's face shield open, even at speed, thus my search for more windshield protection. I have a 20-year-old Parabellum on an R80, and it does a nice job.
Had you had good experience with a taller shield? What do you use?

Re: Tall windshield input?
I'm in somewhat of the same situation - 6'-1" - or at least used to be :-/ - and the windstream hits me right in the middle of my face shield, making a lot of turbulence noise which doesn't help my bad hearing any.
I read one trick on this forum where a rider put a couple extra rubber spacers inside of the top mounts, effectively tilting the windshield slightly more into an upright position which he said helped. Been thinking of trying that.
Otherwise, the only other option I've seen is one of those lamilar lips or whatever they're called that fasten to the top edge of the windshield.

Re: Tall windshield input?
I read that tip and applied it to my current BMW touring shield. It seemed to help a bit, but much less than I want. So my search continues.
What shield do you have now?

If ugliness is not a factor, you may want to look into the Parabellum Tall windshield.
Adding a Laminar Lip and tank wings kept me from selling my R a few years ago. The buffeting was loosening my teeth.

I still have my two piece MRA 'shield for naked bikes' on the 2002 R1150R.See above, if link still works (add .html to end). It is adjustable in angle and position, to some extent. I'm 6'2" and the blast just touches the top of my helmet. No buffeting on my torso in normal weather conditions.I spent some time adjusting it to achieve the result. Lots of helmet noise in my System 4 Evo though despite earplugs..

That's a pretty photo. Do you see over the top of that Lip OK?Adding a Laminar Lip and tank wings kept me from selling my R a few years ago. The buffeting was loosening my teeth.

I bookmarked the site. Some of those shields are nice looking, I think. I'd sure like to find a one-piece solution.gregor wrote:http://www.bikehps.com/acatalog/Screens_for_Naked_Bikes

Thanks.
Yes, except for about 20 feet or so of road directly in front of the bike. I'm 5'11".

I found a V Stream for the R1200R on the site, and a "Z2332 R1150R Tall Windshield, Clear" for my bike. I'll ask them whether they offer a V Stream for the 1150.johnnydee wrote:You might also want ot consider a V Stream!

Re: Tall windshield input?
I started with the regular BMW Sport screen but it did not work for me. My next screen was BMW Touring screen and I was not happy with the results. I did play with the Touring screen for about a year, trying all the tricks posted on the NET. The only screen that worked for me was an AeroFlow Tall screen with the tank wings. I take the tank wings off in the summer, since I found out that large amount of HOT air that comes from the oil coolers ends up in my helmet. With an AeroFlow screen I don't get anymore buffering, like with other screens, and I can ride my bike with the helmet's screen or chin guard Up, without any interference. Actually, I installed a cigaret lighter on my bike and smoking behind such a large screen is no problem at all.
If you are looking for a maximum protection from the wind, the AeroFlow screen is the way to go.

I know that an AeroFlow screen is not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
Good Luck.

I also tried a multitude of screens, now I am very happy behind a Parabellum Scout. During the hot summer I use a short windshield then when it gets cold I switch to the largest windshield, cut down a hair. I found a large one on fleabay and cut it down to be just the right height. Aeroflow wings are a big plus.

It's good to read an unqualified recommendation. Thanks, I'll take another look at an AeroFlow.TicTac50 wrote:I started with the regular BMW Sport screen but it did not work for me. Re: Tall windshield input?
Another good recommendation! I looked at the Scout and realized that it's almost the same Parabellum fairing that I have been riding behind for 20+ years on my '86 R80. My old one's a bit larger, I think, and gives good protection.mcollect wrote:I also tried a multitude of screens, now I am very happy behind a Parabellum Scout. Adding a Laminar Lip and tank wings kept me from selling my R a few years ago. The buffeting was loosening my teeth.
Ugly is not a factor with me!!!...but Anthony, could you please tell me which (of the many) laminar lips you selected to fit a tall parabellum screen?...My tall screen makes my head feel like it's in a paint shaker going upwind...but it's pure bliss running with the wind...

Re: Tall windshield input?
I measured the windshield as specified on Parabellum's website. I called them, and they recommended the correct lip. It was either the Universal 14 Inch For Cruiser Styled Shields - U1114C, or the Universal 17½ Inch For Cruiser Styled Shields - U1117C.D.B. wrote:

The combination of lip and tank wings should reduce your buffeting by 85-90 percent. The lip alone will take about 70-75% of the buffeting away.
I will post a few detailed pics of my lip tomorrow.

Re: Tall windshield input?
It turns out that Laminar is not too far from me, they're near Disneyland in Orange County. I called them yesterday and went to see them this morning with the agreement that I could try a Laminar Lip with my BMW touring sreeen before buying. They were very cooperative and installed one on my bike for a trial. I gave it a good test, including cruising at about 80 on the freeway. I wanted to reduce the wind blast at my face and be able to ride with my visor opened either fully or partially. Unfortunately, while the Lip did seem to raise the wind threshhold about four inches, it did not achieve or come close to my goals. My shield kept slamming shut whenever I opened it at about 60 mph and above. I returned the Lip and we parted friends. At about 6'1", I think I just sit too far above the BMW screen for the Lip to be effective. Other people, I know, have had successful experiences with them. I'm just reporting mine to add to the pool of comments.ASQTec wrote:I measured the windshield as specified on Parabellum's website. I called them, and they recommended the correct lip. Re: Tall windshield input?
harveyrawn,
Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. I had the same experience with the Laminar Lip on my BMW touring shield; that's why I sold it (and the BMW sport shield, and the Cee Bailey, and so on) and bought the Parabellum.
I'm 5'11", and I have the top of my Laminar Lip exactly 1" above the top of the Parabellum Super Tour Shield. The dirty air just makes it over the top of my helmet. I've had the lip higher and experienced cleaner air. but I wasn't seeing over the windshield the way I wanted to.
I hope you don't have to spend as much money as I did before you get the right combination that works.

Re: Tall windshield input?
I am 5' 10" and ride behind the medium height Parabellum with a laminar lip and Aeroflow tank wings. For me, the tank wings were the largest factor in eliminating helmet buffeting (before installing them, I was ready to sell my 1150R due to the buffeting). With all this in place, I can listen to XM/GPS through helmet speakers very clearly at any speed I am willing to run. Phone calls with fair to good clarity up to about 65 mph. I look over the windshield/laminar lip combo and the wind blast just hits the top of my helmet. Can ride with the shield open at any speed with no problem.

Re: Tall windshield input?
I think I'm going to follow your lead, starting will a tall Parabellum. If I want more air calming, I'll then try a Lip or some kind of air blockage beside the tank. The Aeroflow tank wings look way overpriced to me, but I think there are other similar devices.ASQTec wrote:harveyrawn,
