No need to wear earplugs anymore!

Post by BobbyLeBout »

This is a R1150RT Cee Bailey windshield mounted behind the small windscreen.
The mounts will be replaced after the perfect location is found. The RAM mounts make it adjustable

Image

This is the larger of two windshields that I have. The one that will be used is smaller. One inch shorter and 4 inches narrower. It will be mounted on the R1150RT hardware after support brackets are made. EZ Pass is mounted inside the small windscreen in front of the speedo

I know the install is clunky but when the new brackets are made it will be cleaner.
It is great riding without helmet wind noise.

Hello Bobby,

good job =D> just one question: aren't you afraid that the front wheel may lighten when headwinf and medium speed :-k ?

Bobby, what is height of the top of the shield over the headlight (measured from top of shield down to top of headlight)? Looks awfully tall - but that may just be an illusion.

Also - have you tried it without the factory sport shield in place?

The measurement is 30" above the headlight.
I have tried the windshield in at least five different locations.
The idea came from Parabellum when they mounted a second shield on a R1150GS.
I measure from the front of the gas fill ring to the top of the shield 23.25"
From the ignition key to the top of shield 24.75"
From the plastic just behind the seat to the top of the shield 49"
At one point I had the shield too close and it made more noise,
I moved it four inches further away and it was quiet.
The other shield that I will be using is one inch shorter and four inches narrower.
I enjoy the quiet and miss the wind a little.

Bobby,

At 30" - that is a really tall shield. My eyes weren't deceiving me. I assume you're looking through the shield rather than over it?

My question on using it with the sport shield was fairly specific - have you tried it without the sport shield mounted (and if so - how did it work out?)?

The VarioShield I tried used much the same sort of idea - dual layers of shield with an air-slot between them in an effort to smooth the air going off the top edge of the shield. Unfortunately - that didn't actually work in this case, but the shield wasn't 30" high.

If I sit very upright I look over the top of the shield. I am 6'1" with a 30" inseam. More torso than legs. If I want to keep my faceshield open I can move enough to look through the shield. The other shield is one inch shorter and I will look over it for sure. The quietness comes from moving it closer to the helmet.

I did use it without the sport shield but the results were about the same. The sport shield will be painted black with maybe a pinstripe on it. The sport shield is a decoration. I am goiing to shrink wrap it and paint it to see what it would look like.

I have been plagued with helmet noise for years. When I would forget to put in earplugs I would have to stop a mile down the road and put them in. I hate having a windshield on a R12. I bought the bike because it did not have a windshield. I want to run with a fullface helmet and the ones I have purchased make a lot of wind noise.

When I have the permanent mounts made I will be glad to ship you the RAM parts if you want to experiment with a windshield.

Bobby, I think you're on to something here with getting the edge of the shield close to the helmet, which tilts the shield back. In some experiments I did with a number of shields - this was the only way I got a quiet and turbulence free environment.

Good info. I rather suspected the sport shield was decoration - too low and too small to have much effect on airflow over that large a shield behind it.

The quietest combo I found on the R12R was the sport shield - and my Shuberth Concept-II helmet. Wonderfully quiet when the helmet was in completely clear air. Only problem was weather protection and I couldn't hang on for hours at a time at speed due to the wind force on my chest. Other than that - I loved it. The Concept IS a super quiet helmet in clear air. Just haven't found a shield that leaves me in clear air yet.

I'd be interested in that. I have a selection of about 5 different windshields I play with - mostly changing to bigger as it gets colder... but I have one I'd like to try in different position so that would be a cool way to do it.

There are two other measurements that were taken.
1. 51 degrees is what the windshield angles back
2. front to back distance measurement from front of sport shield to top of windshield is 18"
(that was taken by leveling the bike on the centerstand and dropping two vertical lines down)

Luca - this could be my front spoiler.
I don't understand why the front wheel might get light. Would it happen at just medium speeds or also at high speeds.

I have ridden on windy days and the bike feels solid.
