after market slip-ons?

Post by Widetrack »

Hi folks. Does anyone have a recommendation for an after market slip-on for an '07 R12R? I don't really like (nor can I afford the BMW Akrapovic). I'm OK with leaving the CAT on for now with the warranty and everything. There appears to be a limited no. of slip-ons for this bike. Any good/bad points for BOS, Staintune, Leo Vince ? Any warranty issue with a slip-on other than Akrapovic. I'm new to the forum since I recently moved up to a BMW after riding other brands for 37 years. Thanks for the advice.

I've heard second hand that LeoVince makes a good pipe. I've been told to go Titanium with the carbon end cap for the best long term service. The EvoII in the following link looks nice as well as dropping around five lbs in weight. I believe it will be my slip on in the coming months. If you jump on one soon be sure to give us a report.

Ditto on the Leo Vince. I have all carbon fiber, very well constructed. Not to loud but can be made louder by removing the baffle. Also the muffler once installed follows the frames angle, others don't and the look is not the best. Install is simple and everything fits as it should.

This is a good looking muffler. I am curious if there are dyno test sheets indicating any loss of low to mid range torque in exchange for the claimed 5% more power?

At the risk of being a spoil-sport....

I like my R12R's exhaust just the way it is.

It works, it sounds good, it's reasonably quiet (a plus in my book), it looks decent. And I can save a lot more weight by going on a diet... :-)

I do "get" performance mods, generally speaking, but for slip-ons in general and the R1200R in particular, I've never really seen the point; if you're going to spend the money to do a slip-on, why not go all the way, do it right and upgrade the whole exhaust system? Otherwise, I've found what usually happens is I just increase the noise without a really noticeable performance difference.

Good roads,

I think I am with you on this one, I am happy with the quietness, and cannot imagine needing any more power. I am not sure there is more power in any case. Often times freer flowing exhausts sacrifice torque for horsepower, which is not of much use except perhaps in a drag race. Noise is often mistaken for performance. A dyno chart would be helpful.

I do like the appearance of the muffler in question, the stock one is a bit "large", and I do get the weight savings. If one is touring with a full load of luggage, a 5-10 lb savings is helpful.

I'm with you on all of it but the weight savings; if I put myself on a good diet, I could lower the total weight far more than any carbon-fiber or titanium bits ever could... ;-)

The other thing to worry about with aftermarket pipes is saddlebags, unfortunately. On my former ride ('94 CB1000) I had a Two Brothers full system - very nice, noticable increase in midrange torque, lighter, not too much louder. Problem was, the location and direction of the exhaust stream was changed a little, thus partly melting the bottom of one of my GiVi bags.

YMMV (your melting may vary) of course....

+1 for Leo Vince!
I've have a Leo Vince slip-on, on my R1200ST for 5 months now, and am very happy with it. The sales and service were great too.
With the baffle in, it's not much louder than stock, but is much smaller, and looks much better IMO. (I got the ti unit) A real quality piece of kit, easy to install. They even provide a "spring puller tool" which really helps with the installation.
If my memory serves me correctly it was under $500 delivered to my door.
Good luck on whichever brand you choose.

For information there is an Akropovic exhaust listed in the for sale section of the site for $500.00.
I installed the akropovic on my r1200r shortly after purchasing the bike and am pleased with the install.
I agree with the previous posts, there is minimal performance gain (if any),
weight savings is also minimal,
installation is simple.
I use RKA soft bags and have no clearance issues, or heat related issues with the pipe.
What I really enjoy is the look, I never did like the original pipe (way too big for me), and yes I do run continuously with the baffle out. Just a bit louder than stock, and thats perfect for me.

Well thanks a lot for the responses. I have ordered the Titanium Leo Vince. I had been leaning that way and the forum comments were helpful. BTW my local HONDA dealer (much closer than the BMW dealer) matched the best price I found on the internet and was happy to do it.

Also this week I installed a Nippy Normans rear hugger that fits fine and looks great.

Hi guys . . . do you find that you get a lot of crackling/popping or small backfires with the slip-ons?

I have a Ztechnik with the DB killer in and haven't noticed any poping or backfiring. I did get some poping on the overrun with the DB killer out. I ended up doubling the amount of holes in the BD killer (really just a baffle) to get a little more sound.
