Well I am not English native and despite all my efforts
I plan to really understand American jokes and cultural insights in a minimum of 20years.
So ! by free interpretation I thought that Neils and Don were referring to some kind of RACE !
I mean a "MASTER RACE" they both participated in the past...
and here is what pops up to my mind---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3ODe9mqoDE

How funny Celticus and it is strange because I was watching this DVD 2 days ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w01YgTiaFj4 this woman wrote a book about similarities in between the recent 8 years of Bush administration and the way dictatorial powers has deeply and methodically modified the constitution of country's like Chili, Germany or Italy in the past.

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Apologies for getting back on topic, but ...
I’m a boofhead when it comes to anything electrical (and mechanical, for that matter) but after reading some of the posts here, decided to have a go at changing the stock horn myself.
I bought a Stebel Magnum horn and Can-Bus hard wiring kit from Nippy Normans in the UK. Even from Australia, and forgetting the bloody awful exchange rate, Nippy is good value and delivers inside a week.
I’d recommend the hard wiring kit, which allowed me to keep the stock horn connector and also gave me some extra length to fiddle different positions. It was a snap to unclip the stock horn and connect the new wiring (with spade connectors included for the Stebel).
I could have connected the Stebel to the same place as the stock horn (we don’t have charcoal filters on Aussie bikes), but it would have been a very tight fit. There was a spare mounting point on the exact opposite side of the bike which was far less restricted and would have been a better option. In the end, though, there was another free mounting point up behind the headlight. Using the original hardware, the horn tucks in very neatly between the headlight and the front shock and is almost exactly centered. It’s actually less obtrusive than the original horn.
No relay and the horn works fine. It took a dunce like me about an hour.

MrChicken: Can you describe this mounting point a bit more precisely, post a photo, or something to help me follow in your most august footsteps? I'm curious...

MrChicken,
Too bad you have that boofhead (?) problem with electrical stuff. I would be really interested in how that horn works without a relay. Maybe you have a copy of the wiring with the instructions that you could scan and post.

Re: Aftermarket Horn
I don't have a wiring diagram, but this really was straight-forward with the hard-wiring kit. It was just a matter of removing the horn, then pulling off the BMW cable from the horn, and then plugging in the wiring kit to the BMW plug. The fit is perfect, and you're left with two wires that connect straight to the Stebel with the supplied spade connectors.
In positioning the Stebel, I suspect the big advantage with Aussie bikes is that we don’t have the charcoal canister, and that leaves a bunch of places to situate the new horn. There’s a number of unused mounting points on either side and forward of the front shock. I’m pretty sure the position of my horn is the same as posted by Don and Caol. Without the problem of the charcoal canister, there’s a heap of room between the front shock and the headlight. The horn sits well clear of the headlight, shock and forks.
The Stebel Magnum is recommended by Nippy Normans for the bike. It’s an electromagnetic horn and I presume the current draw is less than a comparable air-horn. In any event, no relay was required - I press the horn button and BEEEEP!!! It’s VERY loud and scared the hell out of me the first time I heard it!
I have posted a few very average photos at: http://s691.photobucket.com/albums/vv27 ... n%20Setup/

Re: Aftermarket Horn
We also do not have the charcoal canister so I mounted a pair of Stebel twin tone electro magnetics with the relay they supplieds - when you hit the horn button people hear you loud & clear.

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Philo,
Chances are excellent the relay is redundent. I'm running dual FIAMMs on my R12R - no relay, right off the stock horn circuit. Since the original R12RT's came with this setup, the wiring and ZFE are sized to handle it. Given the dampness I sometimes have to ride through (up to torrential storms), I'd be a bit concerned having a relay in that position. Seems a bit unprotected, and that type of relay normally isn't considered water-resistant.
Just a FWIW..

Is of great interest to me. It means Nippy sussed out the BMW "repair connector" (they always have the yellow wire..) part number for the horn connector. If you have a link to Nippy's page for it, I'm sure lots of people would be eternally (at least for a while) thankful to you. Even better would be the BMW PN - but it looks like Nippy very carefully removed it from the BMW bag that would have the PN on it.

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Hi Don, I would not disagree with you on the capabilities of the stock wiring to run dual horns but I having seen the diameter / cross section of the stock wiring I prefer to use a relay given that the only work the stock circuit then has to do is close a set of points and divert the full 12 volts to the horns which is obviously much less of a strain than powering two horns directly. Agreed the relay in it's original form is not totally water resistant but the photos I used was taken in the process of installation. I have since then totally sealed the relay and terminals and will post another photo of the sealed unit once I have it installed on the new bike which should be here towards the end of next week.

I put my horn relay under the seat where it will hopefully stay more dry.deilenberger wrote: Seems a bit unprotected, and that type of relay normally isn't considered water-resistant.

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Here is an Innocent question coming from a total novice....
If I wire the Stebel horn on a relayed slot of the Centech fuse box
is the Centech relay will just do the job of the relay "Philo" installed ?
---
@Celticus now below
Do you have pictures of the way you routed all your electrical add-ons cables
from the front of the bike to the rear under the seat ?

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Hi Mark, Sounds fine under the seat - the idea of a relay is to shorten the distance the power has to travel but given that a bike is not a limo and we are talking maybe half a metre there should be no problem.

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Hi Frede, I don't see any reason why not providing you use a heavy enough wire from the relayed slot to the horns - then again like I said " half a metre" how much power can one actually lose !

Re: Aftermarket Horn
Oups sorry .... do you mean that its no problem to wire the Horn on a relayed slot of the Centech fuses box
because of the relatively short cable "extension" required.
Or are you saying too that the Centech relay will do the same exact job than the Horn relay kit will do ?
