How much is ABS worth?

Post by enderw88 »

I know what the ABS II option costs for a new bike, but how much should you decrement from the value of a used bike all other things equal? I've seen a few R1200R go by recently that did not have ABS and the sellers were were using prices that were very close to what I would expect for a fully optioned bike.

Were only talking about the effect of ABS on the price of a used bike. Naturally IMHO, I would say that ABS on a two or three year old bike would be worth about $500. On a nine or ten year old bike I wouldn't pay anything extra for it.

Again were not talking about the overall worth of ABS, I think that has been established a few times on this list.

Apart from making the bike much less saleable, I'd probably deduct the full retail price of the ABS from the selling price, about $1000.00

ABS is not worth anything untill you need to stop quickly on a questionable surface, ABS saved my ass and the motorcycle one rainy night a few years ago untill then I thought it just extra weight and complixity. The bike was a 91 K100RS with the first generation ABS, it worked just as addvertised, other than a few pinch marks on the seat all was well. It will keep you upright and in control in a bad situation.

The newest generation of ABS works much smoother than the old systems, and I hope I never have to try mine out again, but you never know. $1000 is cheep if it will keep you from coming in contact with a car.

It's actually worth a lot more $$ than you might think. I saw numerous '07 R12R's languishing in dealers like Max's - eventually selling for well under retail price - because they didn't have ABS. Some were priced down in the $11k range. That is because there are a lot of BMW riders who simply will not buy a bike without ABS (me being one..)

The first time it keeps you from highsiding or something else equally ugly and expensive is when the cost/benefit ratio suddenly makes a lot of sense.

ABS - it's a good thing. Don't leave home without it.

Don- my point exactly. Regardless of the difference in selling price is that the lack of ABS makes the bike way less desirable, and much, much more difficult to sell.

There is a great breaking test in this month's SuperBike magazine where they compare the new ABS-C system on the 2009 Hondas to the BMW HP2 Sport. Their conclusion: "don't try to outbreak a BMW unless the rider has no arms"  Seriously, look at the graphs if you can. It's a beat down by BMW on the Honda's. ABS and ASC each has kept me wheels down once in the past six months. Me likey.
