my kingdom for a backrest
Hi there guys, I know you may not see a ton of posts by me but i lurk around quite a bit.
I am looking for any kind go backrest for a 2002 R1150R.
The Pirate stealth seats are apparently discontinued as are the Sargent Cycle versions. I sent them emails asking if they had anything laying around but I have'nt heard back yet. The only place that seems to have anything in the same scope as a backrest is Acycles.com which has: http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=43424
Has anyone used s backrest ( or any product ) from RCU? I also cant seem to get a straight answer as to how that rest mounts to the bike or what kind of accessories I need to get it mounted. I know I will need some kind of rack but I'm in the dark... Does anyone have a light bulb I can borrow?

I can recommend the Pirate Stealth backrest. It mounts easily and my wife likes it.
I bought mine from the Buy/Sell conference here. I suggest that you keep checking it, iBMWR, eBay, Craigslist, etc.

For a passenger backrest, you could always just go with a topcase with a rubber pad. My Hepco-Becker case works reasonably well, although the H-B (and BMW) rack is only 'rated' for something like 10lbs, so if you passenger really intends on leaning on it, you might want something sturdier. For my passenger, it's more for piece of mind that she won't slide off the back.

Re: my kingdom for a backrest
I had an RCU passenger backrest on my RT years ago. Well made, worked fine. A little difficult to remove the seat, more so when I bought a Corbin (the leather covered brick).
I've always wondered about these guys: http://www.ceebaileys.com/bakup/bmwbakup.html but they don't seem to offer a model to fit the R.

Surprising to me, you seem to be correct about the Sargent backrests. That backrest as you probably know was actually the Pirates backrest made by Sargent. They still make them for the KRs. Could be they, like the Pirate, have simply lost interest in the RR. If you were handy it wouldn't be rocket science to make one.Armo wrote:Hi there guys, I know you may not see a ton of posts by me but i lurk around quite a bit.

I don't get caught in the rain, I ride in it on purpose.

I have a Corbin on my 02' R that I made a backrest for. The backrest receiver is a 5/8" square hole. I got a piece of stainless steel 5/8" OD tubing and put an extra headrest from my VW on it. Works great, looks good, and my wife loves it. If you want to see pictures check out the www.motocampers.com website. I posted pictures of it there.

Boxer,
You don't by any chance still have the Pirates Stealth backrest for the R1150R?

I've got a Pirate's Lair R1150R backrest I've been thinking about selling, along with a bunch of other accumulated stuff.
I was going to replace the backrest with a Givi case with pad but the GF isn't, um, skinny enough to fit comfortably on the pillion with the case in place.
So do I sell the Givi case and use the backrest, or wait for the GF to get skinnier? Does that ever happen?
