Bullet-proof oil filter?

. . . and we got down and looked.. to find what looks like a bullethole in the oil filter. The hole was in the part of the filter that is enclosed by the engine casting - so I doubt if it really is a bullethole, but it sure looks like it. When I have a chance, I'll post a few photos.

Don, with the amount of bling on your ride (as indicated by your avatar), it's not surprising a banger took a shot at you. I'm glad you came through unscathed. You strike me as someone calm under fire.

Sorry, too, that I'll miss meeting you and Harry Costello at the Square Root Rally this weekend. I hope to be there in 2010.

I just got around to reading your post. Wow! I think this incident speaks very highly of your riding skill. How you didn't go down is worth serious study. As far as the hole in the filter goes, It is one of those mysteries that will probably never be solved. Millions of vehicles have explosed oil filters, not just bikes, but cars and trucks and the like. Getting holes in all those oil filters is a statistical non-starter. Just say a prayer of thanks and try to forget about it.

Thanks. Dunno about riding skill - if anything - when I was younger I spent a lot of time on dirty bikes, which does teach you - go with the flow, don't fight it.. I do credit that for several non-accidents I've had.

I'm waiting on my friend who promised me a GS skid-plate, if for no other reason than Harry has one and he can't have something I don't have.. (except the Scout fairing, not my cuppa..) Got to look at Harry's over the weekend between beers - and it's not so awful looking on the Roadster.
