Got my insurance bill and I'm not happy. Alternatives?

Post by Dale_K »

I'm with Dairyland at the moment and the new bill is $918 per year. That's with a big deductible and full coverage. I know comparing insurance rates can be hard but I'd like some recommendations for insurance from the folks here.

I'll check with State Farm because I have my cars through them but the last time I looked into them they were even higher than Dairyland.

Try getting an online quote from Progressive. I've got full coverage, $500 deductible for a little over $500 a year (just one bike with them - although I may move the others over as they come due).

+1 Progressive...

I've even had to make a decent sized claim once with them and it was a painless, overall good experience.

Progressive. Reasonable rates and fantastic claim service after my accident last year (uninsured motorist).

I'm with Allstate and pay roughly $500 for my two motorcycles per year.
Allstate, Progressive, or whatever, they're all crooks, and here's why: Allstate quoted me at $900 for the R alone. I made some calls, found an agency that could have gotten me a better deal with Progressive, called back Allstate and suddenly they could give me a policy for under $500, same value and deductible.

Businesses are in the business to make money. Caveat Emptor and all that...
Like you I get ripped when a business gets too greedy and tries to rake you over the coals. Can't businesses be happy with fifty dollars in profit from twenty people instead of robbing ten people for a hundred bucks?
I guess this is why I'm not in business for myself...
Anyway, after some brief research Progressive was the best deal for me too. Less than $300.00 per month...

I'm with Gieco Cyclegaurd and pay $385 a year for my two bikes, with very good coverage, My '07 R1200R and my 1970 R75/5. As we all know, A lot of conditions are going to affect ones insurance rates. Age, driving record, financing. There are a lot of company's out there looking for your business. It can be a hassle at times, but shopping around can save a few bucks.

I'm with AMIG - http://www.amig.com/products/mc.html - a company that started out insuring RVs. Their rates were 1/2 of Progressive's (when Progressive doubled everyone's rates in NJ..) I believe I'm paying $325/year, with $250,000 liability (where my $1 million rider kicks in..) and $500 deductable on collision. NJ is one of the more expensive states to insure a bike in.

As a general suggestion - it's probably worth shopping your insurance around every few years. Seems MC insurance companies like to try raising the rates just to see if they can get away with it.. and if it fails, they drop back to the more reasonable rate.

+1 on Gieco.

Actually just moved my Home Owners over to Gieco as well. This is after Nationwide (whom I had been with for 15 years with Home Owners) tried to raise my HO 60%. This 60% was even over the state limit - they had the gaul to try and get me to sign the wavier.

I just switched to esurance and after a few years with GIECO. GIECO raised my rate by x2.5 this year due a report that appeared in the state/national insurance database. They had no liability or payout...no costs to them. Talking through it with them, you can make no claims with them but if they "hear about it" e.g if your bike tips over while parked, fall off your parked bike in your garage, etc. the pattern is you or your bike show up in this database, they can and will adjust their risk assessment on your policy. This is similar to the credit report systems and creditors.

Check with Geico. They were the lowest for me by far for my bikes. For my cars and home I have travelers (Geico was a lot higher).

I pay around $900 per year for three bikes and an ATV. I have 500k in coverage and with matching UM and UIM.

I am going to get a quote from Progressive after reading these posts. It's good to check around.

I pay $453 a year with Auto Club (Calif. also an expensive state to insure in). $1,000,000 liability $250 deductible. We also have 5 other vehicles and home owners with them.
