i want to remove the stock muffler and replace it with just an exhaust tip. I have heard that you can do this because the exhaust comes right out of the catalytic converter. if so do i need to remap? and if so what product and where do i get one, and who can install it?

To answer the topic's question: Yes.

There's lot's of threads in the R1150 forum and one I started in our forum. Search on "Lost My Muffler".

As for back-pressure issues, search for "Silencer Removal". Bottom line: in theory and in lots of mileage of practice, no harm done.

FWIW, I really liked it for about a month and, despite helping immensely in freeway lane-splitting (which is why I did it), I grew weary of the loudness on the city streets under heavy acceleration. Normal throttle position is very pleasant, but it growls a bit too loud for my sense of being a good citizen. But then I HATE the Harley's with straight pipes that come roaring up a boulevard outside my house in the wee hours.

I did a (very short) test run a a tyre change (techie rides an R1150, and sent me off with no muffler and a big grin) - all good, and quieter than my F650CS with dB killer in its Staintune pipe (CS is positively antisocial minus dB killer .. it's a LOUD little chappie). Lots of R1200GSs run around Aus with the Staintune pipe minus dB killer and they're quiet enough ...

.. but no muffler at all would void my insurance because the bike would be technically "unroadworthy" in the fine State of New South Wales (even though I think it would pass the statutory noise test) ..

I ran my R1150R without the muffler for 5 years with no issues. I had it tested and certified at 95db at 3000rpm.
When I tried it on the R12R I put it straight back on. It's waaay too loud. The R1150R had a much bigger cat converter under the gearbox and didn't miss the muffler but on the 12 the muffler does most of the sound deadening.

The stock muffler is placed low probably to allow for luggage, but I don't tour so don't need luggage and I'd like to see an aftermarket muffler that puts the muffler in a higher position (like the R1200S or HP2 Megamoto or R1200GS) to show off the single sided swingarm -- are there any such aftermarket mufflers for the R1200R? Removing the muffler and just having a tip looks pretty awesome but I think the noise might be too much...

I have an r1150r and currently run it with a gutted cat and no muffler. I find it very mild and run it in the garage without it bothering my ears. I still get a little over 50mpg on the highway and mid 40's in town.

I have a friend with an r1200gs who took his muffler off and put it right back on do to how loud it was. The 1200 has a much sharp exhaust note.

But running without a muffler should cause no issues.
