Cross country Western Trip

Post by mgdoc8307 »

I just returned from a 12 day 5029 mile run on my new R1200R. What a ride! North Carolina to Rocky Mountain National Park in two days just in time for SNOW. Over Tail Ridge Road 12000+ feet thru recently cut 12 foot snow drifts. Leadville and Aspen were all ablaze in fall yellow Aspen colors. Hotchkiss, North rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison then on to Telluride and the Million Dollar Highway. One morning in Ouray,Co I was greeted with a light snow and 14 degrees. Back home via Taos, New Mexico-Amarillo,Tx I-40 back to Charlotte,NC. My bike performed flawlessly. Very comfortable and enjoyable ride with my Rocky Mayer seat, Cee-Bailey's 20 inch screen , radar detector, GPS and Sirius radio and lastly a RAM mounted Canon camera to capture on the run pictures. The ride at speed was absolutely gloious-like a jet -just the sound of smooth air over my helmet, the purr of my hexhead thru the Aprapovic exhaust at 80 MPH+ for hours on end. Longest day was 785 miles in 11 hours . My best advice is to take less stuff-you just don't need that much. Next trip I've cut my packload at least by half. I can't wait until the summer of 2010 when I plan a three week trip to the Canadian Rockies. Anybody from the southeast interested in going?

Sounds like it was an awesome ride. Phost some of those photos when you can. Do you have handguards? Even with the heated grips I was wishing for the guards when riding in 26F degree weather this past weekend.

+1 on waiting for the photos. A buddy of mine and I are planning a Baton Rouge to Alaska run in 2010.

I probably will have to bring a siphon hose in case his Road King runs out of gas at 150 miles as usual

Probably will need to drag along some oil for him too !

I've tried to post the pictures and have them uploaded to my imageshack account but can't seem to get them here-any suggestions?

look on the site for the photos and you should see something that says "GET CODE FOR FORUMS" Copy that line and paste it into your message here and it should appear.

This is a trial post from your hosting site I set up"

You will notice that it posts as a thumbnail that needs to be clicked on to expand the size.

If you use the "EMBED THIS IMAGE" link from your photo after it is clicked on from the above thumbnail it comes up full size like this:

I prefer Photobucket as it is not as cumbersome to use and get the full size /img link.

I've practiced OB- Gyn surgery at the Bradford Clinic in Charlotte for 25 years. The R1200R is my 18th bike in my life-this was the fourth cross country trip I have made, however, the first three were in the early 70's. Real glad to be back in the cross country saddle mode-the trip was challenging and very rewarding.

Great pictures. I've got a couple of BMW MOB friends in Charlotte who go to many of the local-ish rallies in the warmer months. Let me know if there is any interest and will get you in touch.
I myself spent the weekend at a small rally in Augusta Ga where it was too warm for a sheet in the tent at night.
You got the best color. OB- Gyn surgery .....If you were a mortician you would have gotten the black with white stripes. ;) ;)

Tires are great! Fantastic mileage as they now have 13,650miles from new 06/24/09-OEM tires. Good traction, smooth, quiet. I need to replace them soon.

Sounds like a great trip! You got back just in time for the weather to improve here....

We are headed out for the next 3-4 days on the color tour over the BR Parkway, Cherohala, etc. Just here for a couple more weeks and then off to FL for the winter.

We do have to get together next summer.
