Looking for the power source.

Post by TicTac50 »

I am trying to install running lights on my 2004 R1150RA.
Actually, the running lights are working fine for the last 6 months via nice switch directly from the battery, but since I keep forgetting to turn the lights OFF, I would like to install the relay. On my older bike I just tapped into tail light with no problems, but this bike has an ABS and I am looking for another supply of power, after I turn the ignition ON. I lifted the cover of the fuse box for the first time and discovered that one of the spaces for relay is empty and missing something. It is white housing but nothing is plugged in. After I turned the ignition ON, a couple of pins do get the 12V power. Does anybody know what that “WHITE” housing is for? Will I do any damage by tapping into one of the pins to get the power source to trigger the relay?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Without looking at the diagram, thereby forgetting exactly which fuse or circuit it is in the fusebox,
I tapped into the fused side of the horn relay circuit in the fuse box to run switched power to my driving lites.

The power side of that circuit going to the fuse is a decently heavy gauge wire and even the fused side isn't too bad.
I am running LED running lights, so the lighter gauge on the fused side was fine for me. For regular driving lights,
you may want to tap into the heavier wire before the fuse and then add an inline fuse.

I believe there's a diagram under the fusebox cover that will tell you. I seem to remember it's in the rear row of
fuses toward the left side of the bike.

You will find this article useful:

http://r1150r.net/board/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14295

I went the same route, bought the splitter fuse holder, opened the fuse box and ...
Shock and horror - since my bike is European Rockster I did not have the spare fuse spaces as described.

So I ended up routing a wire from the running light on the brake cluster to the relay (adding a diode/rectifier)(my bike is with ABS).
Then the relay controls a Centech fuse panel bolted into the battery so once ignition is off Centech will be disconnected.

Then the Centech feeds a bank of relays for different uses.
So far my only component to use the setup is a Stebel Magnum (with control circuit for the relay coming from the horn switch).

A snag - if I turn the key to "parking" the running lights on the bike are on (at least Euro models do, American might not necessarily) hence the fuse panel will be "hot".

There was another thread on the forum describing the plug located on top of the airbox - somebody mentioned that one of the wires is +12V once you turn the ignition.
So I might test that and relocate my relay control circuit to feed from there.

Let us know how you progress.

Cheers

Duke and Macx.
Thanks for the help.
I ran the power from the tail light. Just like on my old bike.
Everything works fine.
I will give it a good try before going to the Winter Rally.
