Help Now Please- Cee Bailey Shield
I hope that someone is on here now that can help. I am changing my sport shield to the Cee Bailey Shield. I have just taken off the hex screws, and the plastic caps. I went to take off the BMW sport shield, 3 of the rubber stoppers stayed on the mount, and 1 of the stoppers came out with the shield. Do I need to take out the stoppers and mount on the new shield and place in the mount, or do I need to work the new shield over the rubber stoppers that stayed on the mount. I took needles nose pliers and gently pulled on 1 of the rubber stoppers that stayed on the mount, but it didn't seem to want to let loose, and I was afraid to pull too hard. Hope someone is online now that can help me with this, thanks, John

What I do John, is start the screw in the well nuts and gently pull them out. If they are damaged, replacements are less than a buck apiece at Home Depot. I usually start the screws in all 4 though the windshield and then push them into the mounts. Push them down flush, then tighten the screws. If you have trouble lining up the well nut with the mounts you can loosen the hex screws holding the mount arms. Probably you won't have to do that. If I recall correctly, you unscrew the well nuts and gently pull the stoppers off the mounts and reinstall them on the new shield, then screw everything back in.

The wellnuts (the rubber parts that push into the mounts with the bolt in the middle) on my bike were for metric bolts, while the ones I was able to easily find in the specialty parts drawers at Home Depot were for SAE 10-24 threads - not interchageable. So, if you want to use the originals, you should be able to slightly screw the bolts back into the stuck wellnuts and push them in using moderate pressure to straighten them out, as they are most likely bound in the holes from the previous tightening. Then you should be able to grab the protruding rubber disk part with a pair of pliers (better with the bolt still in place) and pull them straight out. (note: if you pull on the bolt, you are, in essence, tightening the wellnut, making it more difficult to remove)
I clean the inside of the mounting holes and the outside of the rubber wellnuts with isopropyl alcohol (q-tips work well in the holes) and reassemble by inserting the wellnuts through the screen and washers into the mounting holes by pushing on the lightly-screwed in bolt-heads. This stretches the rubber wellnuts, thinning them enough to slide in easily, and then torque them down lightly. They are not supposed to be real tight, but just enough to deform and mushroom the rubber wellnut so it grips to the inside of the mounting hole. For this reason, you do not want to use any type of lubricant in there, or they might pop out when the shield starts vibrating (DAMHIK).
Some people have used longer bolts and drilled through the bottom of the mounting holes and put nuts underneath, or threaded the bottom of the holes, but this defeats what I think is an important safety feature in a head-long crash, e.g. the ability of the shield to pop off and protect you rather than causing injury if it breaks off across the top and guillotines you!
If the original wellnuts are damaged/destroyed, you can get those SAE replacement wellnuts at Home Depot, and I would recommend getting the 1-1/4" long ones (slightly longer than originals) along with the matchng stainless 10-24 bolts long enough to reach the threaded portion of the wellnut through the washers and screen. i can't remember what length I used, but 2" should be close. I remember having to cut/grind about 1/8" off them to get a snug fit.

BMW has discontinued the inserts, you may find a dealer with leftovers if you're lucky. I like the Home Depot suggestion...
You can leave the inserts in the brackets and still install the Cee Bailey's, I've done it. Place the windshield holes on top of the inserts, and with a small ( tiny) flat blade screwdriver you can work the rubber back out. Do the opposite corners first to hold it in place while you work on the other two. Be careful not to strip the screw threads, or you will be off to Home depot.
