Defective oil filter valve??

I am having a couple of issues after oil and filter change.
2002 R1150RA 9,000 miles.
Just purchased the bike. Local dealer checked it out and said all was sound and good shape. OK, so I wanted to be sure fluids are all new. Oil was very clean and I was told it was new. Still wanted the peace of mind etc.
Drained engine oil. Filled with BMW oil - and filter. Started engine, heard usual clatter until oil pressure went up. Let run a few minutes.
The issues are -
1 Every time I start the engine I hear the clatter for a second or two, then quiets down and runs fine.

2 When you shut the engine off about half the time oil level stays at top of window. Even after 15 min or so.
If you re-start you get the noise again momentarily then quiets down. Turn it off and in 10 minutes level will be at proper mid point on window per manual.

Concerned about excess wear on start up and proper oil circulation. I also notice a hot smell not there before I started.
Not a professional wrencher but change oil in my three cars successfully.
All I can figure is sticking filter valve.
Any suggestions?

You've got to accept that as an owner of an R1150R there are certain quirks with this breed. One is a relatively noisy start-up and noisy at idle. I like this aspect of the bike. It allows me to enjoy what I call the "mechanical-ness" of the bike.

Another is the tendency of the oil coolers to hold the oil. The proper procedure for checking the oil with the engine hot is to park the bike on its side stand and let it sit for 5 minutes or so and then check the oil level with the bike on the center stand. Letting the bike sit on the side stand allows oil in the coolers to drain into the pan. When the bike's engine is cool, I like to keep the oil level in the middle of the sight glass with the bike on the center stand.

Don't fret about engine wear on start up. These are incredibly robust engines--there's a guy traveling around the globe with a R1150 engine with over 400,000 miles on his original engine and many engines with over 100k. You seem like a guy who will be particular about the maintenance so your only problem will be which of your children you want to leave your bike to in your will.

I was worried about dry starts (no oil) as well. I made a contraption that my bike is mounted in. I can mechanically turn the bike - 3 revolutions clockwise followed by 3 revolutions counterclockwise literally turning the bike upside down 6 times - this makes me pretty confident that I have gotten oil everywhere I can.



Just kidding - a little clatter for 2 or 3 seconds is ok

I just had the same problem with the start up clatter. It was the left cam chain tensioner, replaced it today and now it is quiet all the time.
