oil changes on R12R

Post by silvermcoupe »

I currently have 20,926 miles on my 08 R12. I followed the 600, 6,000, 12,000 mile maintenance schedule as prescibed by BWM and used my BWM dealer for the work. After the 12,000 mile service I was on a long tour for app 3 weeks in Texas, I.E. Big Bend, Leaka (3 sisters) among other places. I had the oil and filter changed by a Honda dealer in Texas at 18,000 miles. The service indicater came on at 19,000 miles. It came on while I was riding in W Va last week. I know the oil and bike are ok but I'm not sure how to handle the service indicator.

In the future, since I am putting so many miles on the bike I plan to do my own oil and filter changes and have the dealer do the 12,000 mile service. How do you guys handle the service indicators when you change the oil.

Thanks for your help.

A http://www.gs911usa.com will reset service reminders, among other things, but it's not cheap. Then again, the dealer will charge you ~$100 just to plug it in to their computer.

If you are capable of remembering to do the changes without being nagged (just like us '07 owners..) - you can ask the dealer or owner of the GS-911 to set the next service date to some date far far into the future. I believe you can also do this with the next service mileage reminder (dunno for sure since my bike is an '07)..

That way the nag won't show up for a good long time.

YMMV (depending on what'cha set it to..)

Wild West honda? - they are pretty good

Maybe give them a ring and tell them they forgot to re-set the reminder and see if they can get your local guy to re-set it at on their nickle

doesn't hurt to ask

@silvermcoupe, some independent BMW mechanics have the software and will do it for nothing when you need it unless you show up all time only for that matter.

My bike is 31K but warned a 600miles service after a front brake pads change... I guess there is "a reason" for that but my independant mechanic is now correcting it for free. Well he is also installing my custom Hyperpro set of shocks and a few other small servicing in the process.

Thanks guys I appreciate the suggestions. I'm thinking seriously about investing in the GS911. I love the bike and have not been impressed at all with my BMW dealer. I think I will feel more secure doing the work myself.
