24K-25K Maintenance Items

Post by dmk »

I am just getting to 24K and have been doing my own maintenance for a while. I was searching for a maintenance schedule for my '04 and came accross a schedule posted on http://www.ironhorsemotorcycles.com for BMW motoricycles (it included quite a few models including the 1150r) that called for the following:

Check play in Telelever, wheel and swingarm bearings, renew if necessary.
(replace wheel and swing arm bearings every 25,000 miles*)

Now the previous maintenance schedule I was using was for a '03 (I haven't been able to find a '04 specific schedule) and it did not include replacing the swing arm bearings or wheel bearings at 25K. Does anyone have an opinion on whether this is necessary and if so, is it difficult to do?

Thanks in advance!

I have an 04, I don't recall seeing the Telelever as a maintenance item. I did the 36k mile items last year, and have never had to do anything to the telelever or wheel bearings. Checking them for play to see if they are loose would be a good idea. If these bearings are starting to fail, you will see it then. I wouldn't take anything apart though, just give them the wiggle test, and check for smooth operation.
