Please check to ensure this has the right connector for your GPS but I believe it's this cable:

It's a hardwire cable that you attach to your bike. I attached mine (R1150R) to the back side of the accessory outlet (Powerlet?). If your bike has one - it's the easiest place. Otherwise you can route all the way to the battery if you want to take the gas tank off.

Good luck!

I cut the "cigarette lighter end" off of the "cigarette lighter cable" that was supplied with my GPS... then I connected it to the positive wire for the accessory socket behind the plastic cover. I put a ring on the negative lead and put it on the bolt that holds the cover to the frame. The accessory socket is always hot...even with the bike off...so I can fiddle with the GPS with the key turned off.

Only downside is that I would need to buy another "cigarette lighter cable" if I wanted to use the GPS in my car...which I never have.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

any ideas on how to power the gps?
If you're asking about 12Vdc power sources on the bike, then you have options:

OE power socket located in starter cover - couple of feet wire run to handlebar;

tap into ignition switch power at the wire harness bundle near steering head (not recommended);

use fuse tap to source power from fuse box, run power wire along subframe then along side to handlebar (couple feet of wire);

install aux fused power block for electrical add-ons, eg. Centech AP-1, AP-2, or similar sourced from marine supply, with relay-controlled power from battery... this way you get flexibility for any future electrical gizmos and/or heated clothing... this latter option requires gas tank removal in order to safely access battery terminals and do the job right.

Powerlet sells mini USB cords that plug directly into your bikes power outlet and into your GPS unit.
