not to sound like a douch Chitown but it looks like a piece of cake. From the pics it doesnt look so bad. try doing a trans on a audi allroad then u have something to worry about.

Hey ChiTown, just wondering how come you never went with an R1200GS??
It seems a good combo of the two bikes you have, less extra upkeep and maintenance. Sure you've been asked this question before but wouldnt mind hearing your thoughts all the same.
I used to own R1200R...loved the bike but always thought that I should have gotten the GS especially after hitting any gravel road and having the wash board shake the crap out of me but when I hit those twisties I couldnt stop grinning.
I'm looking at the BMW's again but having a hell-off a time spending 23k Can otd + 3-4k on all the extras so waiting on the Sept releases of new Jap bikes. The Yamaha SuperT 1200 might be coming to Canada which might be a viable option.

OK, while I'm stuck on my current journey waiting for a new clutch I get to replace on the road on my GS, I've decided to replace the $15 gasket on the roadster while waiting... But I need help, I have no service manual with me.... Can someone take some screen shots and send me jpegs or PDFs of the section pertaining to changing out the rear output shaft gasket?

As for having a big pig GS.... You asked my opinion....
Its too heavy to be a viable Adventure Bike.... I know, they rode them around the world, but would have been much better off with much smaller, more simple bikes.
I don't like how they handle, or how they look, or how much they weigh. Too many compromises to actually be good at anything but haluing big loads for long miles in comfort.
I know some 12GS owners would argue that, but Ive never seen any photos of big GS where I can go on the 8GS or my R for that matter...
Honestly, the 800 GS is feeling way too big for where ive been and whee I want to go...
In a perfect world I would love the boxer engine in a small package, but it just isn't so.

Things are moving along, I'll have the swing arm off after one more run to home depot....
I could really use some help here, anyone have 5 minutes to look up changing the rear output gasket and make a few screen shots for me? At the very least, info on putting the swing arm would be kind of useful....

Thank you kind sir, and thanks for the tip about protecting the seal by taping e spline shaft, makes great sense.

No, no clutch.... Ive not worked much this year, too busy riding to work.... So it's not in the budget, and as long as it rides it wont be replaced.

With the $20 seal, $12 in beer, and $25 in a few tools I needed, it was a cheap fix.
Seal replaced, bikes back in action, lots of photos taken.
It really was quite easy to do, even with a sparse tool set.... Never thought I would need my camping axe for this job, but.... Oh the horrors!

I leave Thursday to ride the TAT in reverse back to Chicago... Not sure when I'll be back in Cali...
