After reading all the entries about what a B*%ch changing the fuel filter is, I trepidly decided to give it a try anyway for my 24K maintenance on my 04 1150r. Not sure if anyone else had this experience - I didn't need to take the filter and pump assembly out of the tank. I was planning on doing so, but when it seemed to be stuck after I rotated the assembly to get it out, I noticed that I coudl get to the fuel filter and lines without taking it all the way out. I know that technically I should have taken it out to change the gasket, but my friendly bmw dealer didn't send it with the order and I carefully inspected it and it looked good. Couple of questions:
1) Should I expect trouble because of the gasket?
2) The bmw clamps sent to me were too small, so I stopped at the autoparts store and found a typical auto hose clamp (the kind you pinch with plyers to open) - anyone think I should have a problem?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Re: Fuel Filter replacement
1 - If the gasket wasn't too swolen to fit, then you should be ok.
2 - I would use true fuel injection clamps. You should be able to find them locally. Just get the ones that fit 5/16 F.I. hose.
Only a partial hijack - Anyone know what filters cross reference with ours? I could probably choose any filter that fits the 5/16 hose. I think I'm going to externalize it.

Re: Fuel Filter replacement
The bike would not only stall but if warm the engine and gearbox would get yellowish stains which can never be removed ... So it is highly recommended to use appropriate clamps.Beemeridian wrote:+1 to what Andy said;
use only FI clamps, and bear in mind that a number of people here have had those hoses pop off and the bike stall so make sure they are tight.

Thanks to all... you probably saved me a lot of grief... sure glad I didn't put the tank back on already!

Re: Fuel Filter replacement
I'm a little confused, you changed the filter without removing the assembly completely from the tank? I've pulled the pump/filter assembly from mine and a friends tank and I can't imagine changing the filter without pulling it out from inside the "saddle."
I know the assembly can hang up on the hoses, but once the filter is outside, and the pump clears the access hole, everything just sort of falls out. I have to admit, however, I have never replaced that gasket, it does not seem to be much of a "wear" item.
That said, BeemerBoneyard includes one with their Fuel filter replacement kit.

I don't know whether I used the right technique, but after i removed the bolts, I twisted the entire "assembly" to the right and at that point it wasn't really stuck, but it seemed to become very tight. I realized that the filter was about half way out out of the hole and that I could reach it. I just changed it that way and pushed the assembly back. Now that I have to change the type of clamps, I'll hopefully be able to do the same thing. I will take pictures if its successful and will post.
