Bmw Windshields

I purchased a 2009 r1200r in late August and absolutely love it. The bike came with bags and a Cee Bailey's 20 or 22 inch windshield. I only managed one longer ride about 5 hours in total with no windshield and felt like a wanted some wind protection. The problem with my Cee Bailey touring screen is that it is way too tall for me. I am only 5'4" tall and the windshield is at my eye level which is way too distracting. Cutting it down would cost me $ 150 . Since i am quite short and am not planning to tour much I am considering the BMW mini screen or the sport windshield. i believe one screen is approximately 11 inches and the taller one is 13 inches. Any suggestions from riders who have tried or tested both. The parts manager at my local BMW dealership suggested the taller screen, suggesting with my size the protection would be ideal. I have a Cee Bailey that will fit the BMW touring mount. I had it made by Cee Bailey at 15 inches. It works about the same as the expensive BMW touring (the taller one) windshield and absolutley fits the BMW mount. You can have it for 75 bucks and shipping. John Houts ---- [email protected]

If the windshield is too tall, it could be marked and cut on a bandsaw to shorten it. I've done this, just cover the whole screen with tape to keep it from being scratched, mark a line where you want it cut, and cut away. It's not 150.00 worth of work.
If the height is a little bit too tall, but not way too tall you might consider one of my tilting blocks. By giving the screen more tilt, the highest point is a bit lower, and also closer to the rider. This can make it easier to see over, but not if the height is way off. Search the board for more information, and you can send a PM if you decide that you want the block.

If you are going to get just one of the BMW screens, I would recommend the small "sport screen".
Then, as others have suggested, try cutting down the big one that you already have.

I'll PM you a link - there are several shields on a popular auction site at the moment.. including one that should solve your problem. I'd also suggest getting a DON-C block for under the mounting bracket - besides tilting the shield back, it also effectively lowers it since the tilt lowers the upper edge..

If you poke around on the board, you'll see lots of discussion about windshields, and how common it is to have the windshield generate severe turbulence. For almost all users and all types of windscreens (save the stock BMW short sport shield), the problem is that the windshields are too upright. Stock, I found riding behind the windscreen unbearable. Tilting the mount back a bit with Don C's blocks or any other homebrew spacer smoothes the airflow significantly. While such a tilt does slightly decrease the screen's effective height as Don E points out, the greater benefit of the spacer is improved airflow.

Size is idiosyncratic. I'm 6' with a 31" inseam, but I like a lower shield, and the 18" Cee Baileys works very well for me. With the mounting bracket tilted back (I got a block from Don C), there's a very small amount of burble between 40 and 50 mph. Anything above that is glassy smooth and quiet. The burble is minimal enough that I'm not motivated to increase my screen collection to see if I can do better.
