What am I doing NOW?
Some of you have probly realized by now I just can't quit tinkering.
Or, as some folks would say, messin' around.
So, here's my next adventure.
http://s719.photobucket.com/albums/ww20 ... ow%20What/
Not done with it yet, so not going to divulge all right now.
Wouldn't want to TOTALLY embarrass myself if it doesn't work!
In the meantime, see if you can figure out what I'm up to.
Will have it complete (waiting on 1 part) later next week.
Assuming it will work as "designed" (of COURSE it will!)
I'll do a full report after the successful conclusion and road test.
(Well, with all the crappy weather, you need a little something to
keep you occupied and entertain you (even if just a little bit). :-)

Re: What am I doing NOW?
Sorry, gotta ask: what benefit are you hoping to achieve by rotating the rear caliper to the bottom of the FD?
BTW, hope you are successful, good luck!

Well, that isn't really the focus of the exercise.
Good start, though. :-)
Take a closer look at the caliper, the brake disc, and at the ABS ring.

Is this an effort to keep brake dust to a minimum?

I believe you got into serious trouble inside the house, and now your brain, exiled along with the rest of you to the garage, and squirming like a toad, has started feeding upon itself, delivering epiphanies to your feverish imagination which, without the unbiased checks and balances provided by review in front of this august assembly, advance unhindered into your lizard brain and evoke activity involving tools. (squints at the pictures, trying to find a hint)

Re: What am I doing NOW?
I love brain teasers! Ok, looks like you've changed the disc to a solid version, from the cross-drilled (which I also have questions about). But that's not the only change is it? Are you changing it to belt/chain drive?

Hey, good guesses, all!
I thought for awhile everyone was tired of my "antics" -
But the bell hasn't rung yet.
One of you did get within sniffing distance.
Oliver - excellent question, one I hadn't thought of.
Other than a full write up of what, how and why I'm doing this,
which I fully admit no one else will likely ever feel the urge to
duplicate which kind of makes it more of a booby prize than
anything, I'm open to (reasonable :-) suggestions.
Some possibilities - a little discount on a good 2.75 or a good 2.82
final drive - I've got one of each with reasonably low miles
and no problems I've been able to detect. Or on a R1150R
rear wheel with ABS ring and disc with a tire that has a few
miles left on it. Or even on a complete roadster trans in decent
shape except it needs a front seal and the input shaft replaced
with the decent used one I have - and reassembled. I don't
think I'll have time to reassemble it before I leave for my next job
out in Vegas. Don't you just feel soooo sorry for me? :-)
A hint - the main clue is in the pictures and in one of the pictures
captions. So far most everyone's been focusing on the brake caliper.
Not a hint, but I did have to order a longer rear brake hose.
Got it from Spiegler's. Not cheap, but of course BMW isn't either,
but great service and very knowledgeble folks to talk to.
Producing it and shipping it the same day I put my order in that AM.
Oh, Rick - good comeback!! Amazing that one can find a kernel of truth
in even the most evocative paraphrasing! :-)
That's the only thing I'm waiting on to be able to get it off the lift
and onto the road for "the big test".

Re: What am I doing NOW?
I want to say that you pulled a FD off another type of BMW and put it on your R1150R... but what model...
Edit: Rather, I think it to be a different wheel, instead of a different FD.

Your scent receptors are warming up! :-)
Being the only thing really left is to hook up and bleed the rear brakes,
I'm just about tempted to spill the beans - after all, the rest of it has
now been proven to fit - and the wheel even goes around!
maybe tomorrow
I just hope I got the driveshaft close enuf to being correctly phased
so I don't have vibration from that. Tried a trick I saw on AdvRider
where a guy supported the shaft and the FD yoke with small rags so
they lined up, with ends of the rags hanging out where he could
get ahold of them after the shaft joined and before he pushed the
FD the rest of the way so the pivots lined up. I was prepared for
a struggle, but it only took a couple minutes - locked the trans
in gear and rotated the FD just a mite and they slid together!
Of course I started out with the yoke aligned as best I could from
how the FD came out and without turning the shaft.
I understand GS's have shafts splined so they only go together
one way - the correct way - because the suspension has more
travel which imparts more angularity to the U joints - And that
our R bikes don't have that cuz the joints don't get to as much of angle,
therefore if they're close it's OK. Make any sense?
I had the swingarm off the FD the first time I had all that mess apart,
and had "fun" aligning and getting the shaft together with the rear pivots
installed working from the open top of the swingarm. Now I know better

Re: What am I doing NOW?
BINGO!
02 K1200LT 2.62 ratio
To go along with my Enduro low 1st & 6th that
I swapped into my roadster trans last fall all
by my lonesome, with some help from my wife
with the heating and hurry-up-before-it-cools-off
stuff.
Now 5th gear is 3k at 50mph and 3600 at 60 mph
& 6th gear is 3k at 58 mph and 3.8k at 75. No
lugging or vibrating, and without frequent up and
downshifting 5th-6th on 2 lane roads, esp hilly
ones. And I live in a hilly area and always seem
to end up working in hilly areas. And I'm going
to retire in really hilly country. So - - -
I took out and tried it and that is observed rpm & mph.
I haven't finished writing it up yet cuz I'm feverishly
getting ready to leave for an out of state job, and
don't know yet for sure but might have to leave this
coming Tues AM early. Building a bike trailer.
Nice and low so I don't have a struggle getting it up
on a high trailer and don't need a winch or any long
ramps, and the springs/wheels and hitch unpin from
the bed and it will stand on the back end in front of the
small garage I've got rented where I'll be working.
Couldn't find all the parts locally (made 9 stops looking
for 4 things and I still need 2 of them - will have to
fabricate. Get me OUT of this d@#$%d town!!!
If I don't have to leave this coming Tuesday but
next Tuesday instead, I'll have time to have it
sandblasted and painted. Otherwise,
Bake to the FD - I do most of my driving in short trips
on 2 lane roads. And when I do get out on the freeway,
at my age 75 is great plenty fast enuf.
And I still have a 7% reduction in overall 1st gear ratio,
and now I have a nice easy no-lugging and no-vibrating rpm
range in 5th for all my 2 lanes!
Coincidentally, I checked the overall ratios in 1st and 6th
that I have now, and they're really really close to the
R1200R's. Nice if BMW would have seen that light one
model earlier!
