12,000 mile service for R1150 R

Post by rprothero »

Guys,

I am coming up on 12000 miles on my 2002 R1150 ...Question what maintenance should I do or have done to the bike...Things I am willing to take on include

- Oil change
- Trans oil change
- Final Drive oil change

Reluctance unless directed otherwise
- Valve Adjustment
- Throttlebody adjustment

Are there other things that need to be done..Bike seems to run fine other than standard fluid changes but want to be sure to take care of her right..thanks

I do a low mileage on my 2002 R1150R. 17,500 miles so far and do the simpler items myself.
You have not said what has been done previously. If nothing apart from oil changes , then definitely new air filter and spark plugs. Valve clearances are a good idea in case they have closed up and also TB synch. I farmed the last two out at around 12,000 miles.

The air filter is a bit fiddly as it is under the tank if I recall correctly. Used to be a picture link on this site. Getting the plastic cover back in place was a bit of fun, not easy to see where the tags slot in(I dabbed a bit of correction fluid on them eventually) but doable . My filter housing contained a lot of debris by 12,000miles. Recommended interval in the owners book, but from my experience, overdue at your mileage. Watch out for debris (grit/tar etc) around the plugs before removing them. I cleaned as much off as possible with a degreaser and a slim bottle brush before removal. At least there is only one plug per side!

This is a nice bit of info. Page 6 has the schedule for maintenance. You may want to get a sevice manual as well. I've got one , but use the info found on this board more than the manual. You may want to donate to the site and become a member as it is money well spent on valuable information and help from others.

I am not sure where you live. But if you live anywhere near Colorado Springs I can walk you through the Throttle Body Synch and valve adjustment.
