My Parabellum scout report

Post by Michael Hart »

after putting about 600 miles with the scout I really love how quiet the air is around my helmet. I use head phones and I can have them on low, so I can hear the music but still hear everything else around me. very big improvement over the Ztechnic. :)

I have considered the Scout Fairing. They look sharp and cost 200 less that the one from wunderlich. What is you gas mileage with the fairing? Any pictures???

I just read in the out of gas topic that some of the people are only getting about 37 to 40 mpg, I must ride really easy or something because my 09 averages 48 ish yesterday I calculated 52. I do the math manually. My mileage has not changed since the faring. I will post some pictures later today.

I have the medium 18" screen I am 5' 5.5" with a 30" inseam and I still see over the top sitting normal. The people at parabellum recommended the height based on the info I gave them. One of the things I really like is that I can hear the bike now, road noise, engine noises. the only thing I am not crazy about is the mounting hardware. It gets mounted to the headlight. so you have to adjust the headlight after the faring is mounted to it. But I am in the process of making a new mount so that I can take it off without having to move the headlight.

I have the Wunderlich and I can say it doesn't really do ANYTHING for wind. I think it looks the coolest, but no function really. What sucks is, they don't offer a different windshield size for it. Unfortunately, the bike came with it so unless I want to take a huge kick in the wallet I'm kinda stuck with it. I'm 6' with 32" inseam and love this bike - even with the wind hitting me dead in the chest.

If you're shopping for one of these things I'd suggest going with the Scout.

My mileage is around 43 mpg with the sport screen; but that's from the computer. Your bike looks good with the fairing. Clean. Given it's a white bike do you find people mistaking you for the police???

No I haven't had any mistake me for police at least not that I know of.

I just wanted to clarify after reading a post from Chumly this faring works well for me and this is just an opinion. If anyone lived close enough and wanted to try it out before they buy we could certainly meet up and take it for a ride.

I may take you up on that someday Michael. I'm up in NH but get down to CT every now and again. I've been thinking about the Scout fairing for shoulder season riding - but that's an expensive experiment.

cheers,

I installed my Scout two weekends ago. It was a straightforward installation. I got the tallest screen (22") so that I could custom-trim it after riding a while. I also ordered the shorty screen. With the short screen, there is wind hitting just above the chinbar, but it is smooth air. With earplugs to shut out the wind noise, it is smooth and all-day comfy. Again, there is always noise with wind, but the key is to have that wind smooth and not treat my head like a punching bag.

The key here is the lack of wind coming up from the tank scoops, and the vent in the center that runs air up the inside of the shield. Keeps things very smooth, but with plenty of air on arms and legs. It is most definitely NOT like a faired touring bike. It still has the character of an unfaired standard. This is still an open-air feeling. Windy, and in a good way.

The tall shield put the wind stream right at the top of my helmet. Quiet enough, but a little bumpy. I noticed that moving a bit closer to the shield reduced the buffeting. So, taking a tip from the tilt-block fix for the touring screen, I crafted a new mounting plate for the Scout that moved it higher, closer to the rider and tilted it back a bit. If you notice on Michael's pics, the bottom edge of the "dashboard" sits below and in front of the brake fluid reservoir. The bottom edge of my dash now sits above and halfway back the brake reservoir. This is at the limits of the ability of the headlight to still clear some stock hardware. The entire Scout is now higher and tighter into the bike. Looks better, IMO. And...the buffeting is reduced to zero, while the wind hits above the eye shield. Again, plenty of wind on arms, shoulders and legs. I trimmed 1" off the 22" shield to adjust to my taste.

I'll post pics of the whole setup later this week. Now that I've got it set up, I'll send it out for painting. I also plan to install some sound-deadening foam to the inside. The Scout collects and re-directs engine noise straight back at me, but that can be fixed.

Final note -- the Scout is much smaller from the rider's perspective than I had anticipated. It is not remotely like a faired touring or sport-touring bike. It is still very much a standard bike.

THANKS - the OP's pics and your review make it clear why the Scout has it over the Wunderlich and Wudo (not so sure about the Wudo) in that it's blocking the tank scoops and thereby preventing the turbulence they seem to create.

Pity it's not readily avaiable in OZ (although with our dollar at $1.08US, who knows... ) Plus our indicators are closer in, as are the European ones - not sure they'd be visible.

Funny that the Scout seems such an old design (and I guess it is) but in white on that bike, it looks good.
