Wiring Diagram

Post by leenlu »

Hello all,

For 3 years now I'm riding my R1150R 2001;no trouble at all; until last week:
The engine suddenly stopped (with a big bang) wouldn't start anymore untill I switched out the lights.
I immediately turned back towards home.
Turned off the bike and started the engine:OK
After I turned on the lights some smoke came from under the tank!!
No fuses were melted; but some wires in the two largest plugs were melted.

After dismantle the harness I saw some wires were melted together.

my question:
Does anybody have a diagram for me to rebuild the melted part?
It will be more than welcome.. :smt102

Ouch. I'm guessing that no fuses were blown because the early R1150** bikes have important bike circuits with no fuse protection!
Found some info in ADVrider this year about the unprotected circuits issue... http://www.r1150r.net/board/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=22922

Where exactly is the wiring harness location that you have shown in second image?

You can get wiring schematic info from aftermarket service manuals, and from the BMW electrical CD-rom (highly recommended).

If you've got just a few burnt wires, then we can likely provide some info, but I'm worried that your situation might be more serious.

Do a search here for "wiring harness", as a couple of R1150R owners have experienced similar problems.

That is a tough one. Happened to me before because of one of the bulbs in the instrument cluster went south. As a result I had a short circuit which went all the way from the front harness (tell-tale) into the main wiring harness. And it is near to impossible to find out how far the damage has gone unless you are willing to unsplice and inspect the whole harness and all wires. If you are not then there is always a risk that you "repair" one part but somewhere hidden in the harness some fried wires are left and you'll fry everything again ...

I got myself a second-hand harness through fleabay and got it mounted from my local workshop. Took them more than 2 full days to remove the old and install the "new" harness. Total cost was around 1000 USD (or around 800 Euros) and most of it was luckily paid by my insurance.

If you would like to inspect your harness you'd need the complete diagrams which is available on a CD-Rom from your stealership.

Indeed, no fuses were blown..
the pics show the location under the tank where a tightly wrapped tape holds a spaghetti-like wire bundle.

Only the gray/blue wire has melted.
That must be the wire for the display and the numberplate light.
the only damage I found is where the gr/bl comes in the plug under the tank and behind the headlight hanging in a tirap where all wires 'split up'.
Unlike all other tiraps;this one wasn't very tight; there was room to move for steering.
Maybe it's a good idea to place a fuse in the gr/bl wire after repair to discover some more damage.

PS
I do have a CDrom but that does not contain a wirediagram

Usually this problem is caused either by broken wires at the lock or because zip-ties in the front being too tight (wires rubbing because of steering movement).

The wiring diagrams are not contained in the repair manual from BMW. These are available on a separate CD-Rom from your stealership.
