New here and touring screen question

Post by jdm »

Hi

Just acquired a 2011 R1200R. Delighted with the bike. It has a sport screen and as I plan a trip from the UK to Italy in May would like some advice on an appropriate screen. Not sure the sport screen woul be ideal.

Thanks

Hi, I've just fitted an MRA vario screen to mine to replace the sport screen for my Austrian tour. At 150 GBP from HPS it's a lot cheaper than the BMW screen (280 quoted yesterday) or say, the Ztechnic (looks great - 350 from custom cruisers) or the recently available Cee Baileys (excellent kit but also needs the BMW touring mount frame).

The MRA has a bit of a Heath Robinson mounting - two clamps fit to the bars and two rods go to a ball joint fixed to the screen - but I did a 70 mile test ride yesterday and it performs very well. I've just added a small adhesive foam pad between the screen and the back of the instrument cluster to reduce the screen vibration caused by the engine vibes. If I had the gear I might be tempted to try to drill it so it'll mount on the sport frame. Its he one in the middle of the image below although I went for the clear option.

The screen protects my GPS mounting and my chest from the weather whilst still allowing airflow to my helmet.

Welcome Jack,

I hate to be the one saying it - (Joe Finn is prolly gonna yell at me..) - but spending a tiny bit of time with "search" will turn up the vast amount of knowledge on this forum for windscreens. It will also turn up some drivel, but you'll probably spot what's good and what's dreck quickly enough.

"One man's perfect screen is another man's sublime torture" - me.. think on it and I suspect you'll understand why search might be useful.

I am probably being a bit lazy; sorry. I have done a bit of searching but many of the screens seem to come from the US and I was hoping to get some guidence from a UK perspective.

The Wuedo screen works very well for me.
It is a very stable screen, fits the RR line and one can adjust the slope of the screen very easily.

I'm a UK biker and will be collecting my R1200R in a few weeks. It will be supplied with the sport screen. I don't think it will be tall enough and will probably buy a Cee-Bailey screen from the States since it uses the same mounting and doesn't cost megabucks - see http://www.ceebaileys.com/bmw/bmwr1200rss.html
