Re: sat nav
I initially wired mine direct to the battery...but when I took the bike in for its 600mile service I asked the dealer to wire it in for me. I seem to recall they said there was a connector point somewhere near the front of the petrol tank
Re: sat nav
Yeh, like the GS. Was wondering exact position (do I take the tank off) and the connector I need to buy to use it thanks.
Any ideas

Re: sat nav
Photo of the connector here. You just need to remove the plastic bits on the front of the tank - super easy. More good information in that thread.
I think the part number for the part you need is in this post. I bought one myself and wired it up to a Powerlet socket.
I ran into some issues, though - I use my iPhone and Navigon as GPS, and apparently charging the phone uses more juice than that connector is supposed to supply. The system kept shutting off power to it, and no, it wasn't a crap wiring job.
So I wired up two Powerlet sockets direct to a Touratech TPS-15 under the seat, and mounted the sockets in a plate on one of the bar mount bolts.

Hooligan, what do you think of that screen on the R? (sorry to hijack the thread)

I also use the connector near the front. Just zip-tied it to the frame and presto.
Anybody here know the torque settings of the 4 bolts that fasten the handlebar?

Re: sat nav
Do you mean that the power was turning off after the bike was still running? Mine shuts off after a few minutes which I understand is the way the port is designed. I've never had any issues with my GPS charging while the bike was running so just wondering.SF_Hooligan wrote:...apparently charging the phone uses more juice than that connector is supposed to supply. Nippy Normans sell the appropriate connector. A bit cheaper than BMW.

Re: sat nav
I think it's fine for twisties and whatnot. I'll admit, although it pains me to do so, that I may need a bit more of a screen for long freeway trips - like on the way to the twisties. I don't get any real buffeting or anything, but my helmet is loud as hell.SteelD wrote:Hooligan, what do you think of that screen on the R? (sorry to hijack the thread)
Nope - it would shut down spontaneously while the bike was running and I was riding. I understand that's what the Canbus does when the draw is out of line with expectations. Turning the bike off, waiting a couple minutes, turning it back on would bring it back temporarily.devguy wrote:Do you mean that the power was turning off after the bike was still running? I was going to install a power outlet this weekend and direct connect it using a repair connector to the factory GPS plug. This way I can plug a USB adaptor into the outlet and power Apple products.... this won't work?
...clock is ticking on our trip date and would hate to think I have to start over on the connection plan

Re: sat nav
Yes, I experienced this with only an iPhone charging - nothing else connected. Seemed strange, so I double-checked everything but it still occurred. I was heading out a on a trip, so I just wired straight back to a Touratech TPS 15 and had no further issues - had two Powerlets up front and have run the iPhone and GoPro at the same time with no issues. Certainly could have been a shaky connection on my part or a bum connector, but I didn't feel like messing with it. I've had zero issues running lots of stuff from the TPS 15, though.BLAIR1200R wrote:SF_Hooligan, you experienced this symptom with only the iPhone charging?Nope - it would shut down spontaneously while the bike was running and I was riding. OK, thanks ... this seriously sux. I think I'll go ahead and make the connection and see what happens... then if it fails, decide if I want to mess with the electrical only days before departure...Yes, I experienced this with only an iPhone charging - nothing else connected. I've been reading the posts, but didn't see the flag until now ... all sorts of other devices get powered by the factor GPS connector it seems... extreme bummer that the iPhone jacks it up.
Thanks again for the info... once again, great forum.

Re: sat nav
Yeah, again - it could be something specific to the plug I got, etc. I really don't know if an iPhone takes more juice than a normal GPS when charging/playing music/running Navigon/looking for nonexistent cell signal. Maybe?BLAIR1200R wrote:OK, thanks ... this seriously sux. Re: sat nav
I've been powering my tank box for years, charging/using my iPhone and having my GPS running at the same time off the GPS plug. Heck I even had a 12v>110vAC power supply connected to that same OEM GPS circuit in my tank box to charge a MacBook Pro with no issues.
My experience would lead to believe there's something wrong with Hooligan's iPhone charger/cable/something.
Unless you're powering an air compressor or heated gear for example, the CAN-BUS shouldn't trip with just consumer electronics plugged in.

Re: sat nav
...then there's hope !
I made the pigtail tonight (repair plug-to-12v outlet), put a voltmeter on it and got 14v, connected an old Tom Tom and things worked great so far. Checked voltage after I turned off the bike, waited and started it back up and got 12.3v... guess things are looking good.
I'll put the USB adapter in the outlet tomorrow evening, connect the iPhone, crank up the Nav app, and see what happens...
I'm mounting the outlet next to the canister, just because I want to keep the top side clean and simple. Not the most user friendly, but I won't be using it that much.
Cheers
