Battery called it quits

Post by Tarmac »

The original battery on my 2007 R1200R gave up on me this morning. Hit the start button, and everything went dark. A couple months back when I had the 6k service done, they told me it was bad, so I'm not surprised. I think 5 years for a battery in Tucson AZ is pretty good.

On the plus side, it was a good excuse to ride my F650ST into work.

Now for the hard part, figuring out which battery to buy.

+1 on the Odyssey 535
If you do a search on 'battery' you'll get enough information to earn a degree in batteryolgy. On the other hand, you might also become so confused that you'll just trade the bike in for a new one with a new battery in it.

The Odyssey takes a little work to get in but IMHO it's worth it (read old threads). If your looking for something that will drop right in, the WestCo 12V14-B (among others) will do it for you, it's the one WestCo lists as a direct replacement and I had one in my bike for a few weeks..

I had several Odysseys in my R1100RSL. They were significantly better than what came stock, and worth the (small) price of a bit more trouble to fit. When the current BMW gel gives up, I'll replace it with a 535.

I have an extra, brand new, never used Shorai LFX21A6-BS12 battery.
Never use a battery tender again.

As I said 'Lots of battery information in the old threads'. I have no personal experience with the MotoBatt product only what was on the Guzzi list, so I can't recomend it. But it does look interesting and many people are useing them.

In the end everyone has to make their own decision on where to spend their money, useing the information available.

I've had a MotoBatt for a few months. I've had no problems with it, but I keep it on the battery tender most of the time. After the first battery died (after two year and half years) I figured it would only help extend the lifespan, especially since I pretty much only ride on weekends and the bike is sitting unused most days.

Tarmac...keep us posted about the performance. I think the weather has very hot and very cold in Arizona. Good luck.

I agree Harry ... me , everyone spends money in the best way they can... but it looks so good in that report you mentioned.

Got my 469 Motobatt from Amazon.com today. Dropped right in, no mods required. It comes with plastic riser/spacer to make it the right height. I notched the bottom of the plastic riser plate to accommodate the stabilizer bracket that is on my R1200R. Bike fired right up. If it lasts a couple years or more I will be happy. Easiest install since my slip-on exhaust.

The MotoBatt MBTX12U showed up, went in without any trouble, and the bike fired right up. That's about all I expect from a battery. I will let you know if/when it craps out on me.
