Hard Case Locking Latch

Post by Dstrator »

I was in a close on last weekend, and unfortunately the hard case paid the price. My locking latch was sheered off and I am looking for a replacement latch mechanism. I feel that it is a tad high to be paying $200 for a repacement case back when all I need is the latch. If anyone can provide some help, I would be grateful.

I had a similiar scituation last fall where the latch broke as I was riding for no apparent reason. Fortunately I was going slow and the car behind me beeped and pointed my bag in the road. I found a bmw salvage yard close to my home and was able to buy the latch for about 125.00. It was fairly easy to replace. there have been several posts on how to do it. The trick is finding the correct sized rivets. I found a company called Fastenal that had ones that I could use. The only difference is the replacement was steel and not aluminum so they were harder to drill out if you make a mistake. I do suggest a good pop rivet gun. The whole procedure took less than an hour. I do suggest finding an alternate way to secure the bags. I drilled a liitle hole in the ribs of the hard bags where it sits in the bag and secured it with a black cable tie. You can't even see the tie and I now have the piece of mind knowing my expensive to replace bags will stay secure to the bike.

Thanks for the reply,
that is not a bad Idea, I might not even worry about the latch, considering everything else works well enough.

I went with an aluminum rivet that is just a hair larger than the oem, purchased from a local store. Just need to drill out the old and enlarge the holes.
