About to buy R1150r

Post by mkuszek »

I rode it.I like it.
I have 1 concern. When I applyed the rear brake only at about 15 mph the whole bike seems to shift in the rear.It kinda scared me having this response.
Is this normal because of the shaft drive?
I have a Yamaha FJR 1300 with shaft drive and when I hit just the rear brake it did not behave like this at all.
To be clearer -
Originally I thought it had ABS but when I went to look at it it did not.
When I was test driving it I wanted to independently check both the brakes (front then rear).
The fronts work fantastic and when the rear is used only at 15 mph hard braking the rear suspension dips and it kinda feels like the rear of the bike twists right.
If I use both brakes it is not noticeable.
I was thinking that this maybe be called "jacking" from the shaft drive and may be perfectly normal for this bike but would like to confirm before I purchase it.

Sounds like you are locking up the rear brake. The rear brake on the non ABS R1150R is incredibly easy to lock up.

What did you buy and how much did you spend?

I recently bought a 2002 R1150R and I only had the rear brake lock up on me one time on the original tires which were in bad shape. With new tires on it has never happened. What kind of shape are the tires in?

I would add ruling out issues with bearings and final drive.

I've never felt mine do that except once at the end of a Deals Gap run, felt a bit of a skip, but I was using ME880 tires and going significantly faster than 15mph.

You need that checked out, I think.

It's repeatable? Maybe you hit some gravel?

I have an 04 with antilock brakes. The brakes are partially integrated so front brake activates both front and rear and rear brake only activates the rear. When using the rear brake only, the stopping distance increases dramatically but there is no deviation from the intended line or twisting? Do you have the preload on the rear shock set properly?

Out of curiosity, why change from the FJR?

I went from the JFR to a DL1000 V-Strom and now have a Triumph Sprint GT 2011.
I want to try as many bike's I can before I get planted in the ground.
I did not like the FJR on the highway. It was too buzzy ( 4 cylinder)and hi rpm and not relaxed.
I liked the Suzuki v-strom but not much power (98 hp)and wanted to try something faster (138 hp) like the Triumph that is not buzzy ( 3 cylinder) on the highway.
If I want to go speeding around I take my Triumph. If i want to be relaxed and enjoy the larger windscreen in cooler weather I take the beemer.
The best of both worlds.

Just put a deposit on a 2002 r1150r. ABS, system cases, engine guards, tank bag, air thing for seat, and windshield. Light blue. 30k miles. $4k even. New tires battery and clutch (it may have had spline issue when talking to the seller). The woman I bought it from did not have all the technical details but seemed honest. I rode it and gearbox was smooth and clutch action very light. Front brakes are kind of scary how well they bite. Stomped on the rear brake and ABS kicked in though not much stopping power (rear only) compared to my valkyrie with the car tire. Looking forward to picking it up Dec 1st. Will sell the Valk in the spring.
