Advice needed Please!

Post by Robert_winter_1000 »

Hello all,

For the last two years I didn't use my R1150 R for medical reasons. It looks that this year will be the same. I hope I can use it next year.

The bike is staying in the garage on the center stand connected to an automatic battery charger. The tank is full with gas + fuel conditioner.

The question is: Do I need to take any extra action in order to keep the bike in a good condition? Do I have to expect any problem next year when I will use it?

Any advice will be highly appreciated.

Best regards,

Robert

If you're physically able, it would be beneficial to start the bike and verify that all functions and then drain fluids and replace with new. Even the smallest amount of moisture can turn acidic and have negative effects on the crankcase / gearbox/ transmission.

Most of all, I wish you improved medical condition to allow you to get back on and ride.

If there are no oldish fluids in the engine/gearbox/finaldrive then I'd say just leave her alone. Make sure the bike is not stored in a humid place and use old bedsheet as cover ... Keep the battery on a charger (or remove and store in the cellar). Cover the exhaust opening and the air intake to avoid any critters from creeping in ... Thats about it.

Hope you get better soon! But if there is no light at the end of the tunnel better think about selling the bike and maybe buy another one after some years.

I have used Stabil to keep gas "fresh" for up to several months in my boat..ok, the marine Stabil. It seemed to run ok when I did burn it, although I never analyzed it. In my bike I drained it before I cranked it this last time after a couple months sitting, because I couldn't recall if I had non-ethanol in it, so didn't want to take the chance. Also gave me an excuse to change out the internal tank hoses. Two years is a long time, no matter what you have in the gas to preserve it, imo, but I understand about circumstances conspiring.

I wouldn't start it unless you (or someone you know) can take it out for at least a 30 minute ride to get it thoroughly warmed up. It doesn't help it to start it and run it on the centerstand for a few minutes. That will likely cause acidic buildup in the oil. Though I suppose if you changed it right away it would probably not matter. But people who start their bikes up during the winter and run 'em for a few minutes only are not doing their bikes any favors.

I would also wipe down the front fork tube's entire chromed surfaces and the front/rear shock absorber chrome shafts with an engine oil wetted paper towel to prevent rust and corrosion from 2+ years worth of damp weather days. Don't worry about the oily mess, it'll soap wash off the day before you get back-in-the-saddle and ride.

Gentlemen,

Many thanks to all of you for your efforts & kind advices, I really highly appreciate.

Rob, is it better to use car wax or engine oil to protect the chrome work of the motor.

Best regards,

Robert
