New member, just got a r1150r, exhaust question

Post by westmk »

Hi All,

Overseas and just picked up a super clean '05 with 9000 km on it. Thinking about the Leo Vince muffler and y-pipe conversion, K&N air filter and get rid of the CAT. The question. Is chip/remap required with this set up? I have seen mixed comments on this, most said not required. Anybody confirm? Thanks

Good suspension and track days... That's the best place to invest.

Before you start the aftermarket-modding, and if you're technically inclined, I suggest you read the following threads:

Fwiw, I'm convinced that I lost performance via change to y-pipe and "performance" silencer. The R1150** bikes are mapped really lean, and conventional hot-rodding mods do nothing but exacerbate the high lambda condition. Nonetheless, an exhaust system change can help trim a few pounds from a heavy naked bike.

just take off the muffler, see how you like that before you go any farther. Leave the cat on, but remover the muffler. That may satisfying for you

New member here! I just pulled the muffler off mine and was pleased with the result- I like the burble. Not loud, but a little more throaty. Easily reversible, 10 min job.

I've only had my 2002 R since last Thursday and am falling in love...

Welcome all! The Dr. is right. Many have just removed the muffler and replaced it with something like this:

It will be lighter and have a better sound.
I personally took my can off and gutted it and cut it down about 6".

I've got a Leo Vince SBK on my bike with a modified 2 Bro's y-pipe on my Rock. Of course I've also got some other goodies installed as well (Techlusion, Rocket Sprockets, InDuct, RS intake ducts, Brisk plugs) and it runs beautifully. Is it ideal? Probably not, but it pulls from 3K-Redline without letting up and it puts a smile on my face.
