First BMW

Post by redstreak »

Hello, First time here and I just purchased an 04 r1150r with 8800 miles on it. This is my first bmw ever and its been great so far besides the clunky gears when I downshift.
The Bike came naked (no accessories) and since it came with no service record I did the following:

Change the engine oil and oil filter
Change the spark plug
Check the brake pads and discs for wear
Lubricate the stands, lever pivots and cables
Check the gearbox oil level
Check the final drive oil level
Check the tightness of all nuts and bolts

I plan on doing 2 day tours every other weekends and wonder what else I should do to prepare for those trips.
I have purchased a parabellum windshield, and ordered bar backs, and even took my seat to a local upholster to trim it down around 1 inch so I can firmly and confidently be flat footing on stops.

Check the cable ties near the steering head, replace plastic Quick disconnects.

Looks great! There's a trick to shifting these things smoothly. Won't take you long!

All of an hour on my (new to me) 2002 R 1150 R and am loving it. Got it with 24,000 kilometres, hard bags included, and like new. I am looking forward to recovering my riding skills and a summer of fun!

Lube the shifter, it makes a WORLD of difference in how these shift.

1. Remove clips "6" and then pop off shifter linkage "5" with a screwdriver / pry bar.

2. Remove flat head bolt "7", this takes a few metric allen sockets, I break it loose with a very short 3/8" drive allen for leverage, then use a tiny 1/4" drive
allen for the tight clearance between the bolt head and Cat converter to finish getting the bolt out.

The bolt has Blue dry locktite on it from the factory, put a dab of lock tite back on when you re-assemble.

After you have the bolt out, clean and grease the inside of bushings "9" and the balls / sockets with synthetic grease, then put it all back together.

The felt dust seals (bushings) #4 may be missing, I replaced them, $1.24 each bmw 23417650149.

It will shift much, much better! repeat with each annual inspection for best results.

I almost looked at that bike! Ended up with a different 1150r, but glad to see someone grabbed it. I've been racking the miles up on mine and loving every minute of it

I got the Givi V46 topcase and the rack for it from Revzilla. It's a great package for the price and fits the 1150. I'm sure others will have their preferences.

Also, +1 on the brake fluid but if yours is an ABS, have a shop do it.
